The Construction Zone ⚠️

Grade 1M started their Entry Point and Knowledge Harvest for their new International Curriculum Association unit , “Buildings.” Our creative Milepost 1 teachers, Mr. Romel and Ms. Hazel, transformed their classroom into a construction site where learners pretended to be engineers and architects. They worked together to build houses using different materials, such as straw and chopsticks.

Learners also shared examples of different buildings and discussed their purposes. Some initially found the word “building” difficult to understand, so we introduced the Japanese words “tatemono” (建物) and “biru” (ビル). After this, most learners were able to give different examples of buildings and explain what they are used for.

Using our Heads 🧠

Last week, Grade 1M started learning about the brain. Learners shared what they already knew by discussing questions such as, “What does the brain do?” and “How does the brain work?” They listed the brain’s different functions and created their own brain replicas that they could wear like helmets. 🧠

The learners then explored the pictures on their brain replicas and discovered more about how the brain works. It was a fun, hands-on way to begin our Primary Curriculum unit, 'Brainwave'!

Welcome Prep Class! 🎉

The Prep learners had a wonderful and exciting first week of school as they began their new learning journey together. As part of their first International Primary Curriculum Unit, “Who Am I,” the learners participated in a variety of engaging activities that encouraged them to learn more about themselves, express their individuality, and get to know their classmates.

To celebrate their first day of school, the learners created their very own “First Day of School” headbands. They enjoyed decorating and personalizing their headbands, allowing them to express their creativity while making a special keepsake to remember their first day. Wearing their colorful headbands also helped create a fun and welcoming atmosphere as they began adjusting to their new classroom and routines.

The learners also completed an “All About Me” activity as an introduction to the “Who Am I” unit. Through this activity, they had the opportunity to share information about themselves, including their interests, favorite things, and personal characteristics. This encouraged the children to recognize and appreciate what makes each of them unique while also discovering similarities and differences among their classmates.

Another meaningful activity involved working collaboratively with a partner to draw one another. The learners took turns observing their partners and creating drawings based on what they saw. This activity encouraged them to pay attention to details and helped develop their communication, cooperation, listening, and social skills. It also provided an opportunity for the learners to interact with their classmates, build friendships, and feel more comfortable working with others.

It was a joyful and meaningful start to their Prep journey!

Global Perspectives in Action with Grade 9! 🌍

Our G9 learners took a deep dive into global ideas and events by exploring the difference between perspectives and issues using the STEEP framework:
🔹 Social
🔹 Technological
🔹 Economic
🔹 Environmental
🔹 Political

Discussing how to be Adaptable! 🧩 🧠

Last Friday, the Elementary section had their first assembly of the year! They spent it welcoming new learners and teachers, discussing why the school rules are important, upcoming events, and house points!

They also explored the meaning of our PLG of the month: Adaptability! In an activity we had volunteers recreate a structure out of blocks by memorizing the pattern then creating it while blindfolded! They had to adapt to the situation by depending on their other senses to assist them. We encouraged our learners to apply their adaptability in their classrooms and on tasks.

Making Connections 🧩 🧠

Last week, the Grade 1B class made a huge network of neuron connections in our classroom using blocks as part of their International Primary Curriculum unit Brainwaves.

Each block represent a neuron! They learned that long term learning happens when we make connections, when we practice and when we focus. The more connections we make, the more we learn. They also created a brain craft and discussed how amazing our brains are!

Ice Cream Cooking 🍨

１歳児ではエプロンに着替えて、みんなで Ice Cream Cooking を楽しみました✨

材料はなんと 牛乳・塩・氷 の3つだけ！子どもたちは袋を持って「Shake, shake!」と元気いっぱい振り続け、少しずつアイスクリームができあがる様子にワクワクした表情を見せてくれました♪

最後は、お好みでフルーツやクッキー、ソースをトッピングして、自分だけのオリジナルアイスクリームが完成🍓🍪🍫

Our one-year-old class put on their aprons and had a wonderful time making ice cream together! ✨

With just three simple ingredients—milk, salt, and ice—everyone enthusiastically shook the bags while saying, “Shake, shake!” It was so exciting to watch the ice cream slowly come together!

Once the ice cream was ready, the children added their favorite toppings, including fruits, cookies, and sweet sauces, to create their own special treats. 🍓🍪🍫

The Marshmallow Challenge 🧠

This week, the Grade 4 learners have been focusing on developing their metacognition skills in the International Primary Curriculum unit, 'Brainwaves'. They are thinking about their thinking and becoming more aware of how they learn. The class began by asking, “Do we all think the same? Why or why not?”

Learners recognised that we are all unique, with different families, cultures, experiences, perspectives, and ideas. This led to our engineering challenge, and when the marshmallows appeared, the excitement was certainly evident!

Learners were given 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 marshmallow, 30 cm of tape, and 20 minutes to build the tallest freestanding structure. It was fascinating to see the different approaches teams took! Some learners carefully planned, while others tested, adapted, and tried again.

During our reflection, learners recognised that we do not all approach problems in the same way and that we can learn from the ideas of others. We also discussed “What happens when things don't go as planned: Do we give up, or keep going?”

This challenge provided a wonderful opportunity to practise our PLGs, particularly resilience, ethical and respectful behaviour, and positive communication. As the year progresses, the class will continue using collaborative challenges to help learners think deeply, communicate, listen to different perspectives, solve problems, and reflect on their learning. The marshmallows may have created the excitement, but the thinking and learning were the real rewards this week!

What a wonderful way to kick-start Unit 1 in IMYC Middle School! ❤️

Our Entry Point brought Grades 6, 7, and 8 together to learn, communicate, collaborate, and make meaning as one learning community.

From Discovery in Grade 6, to Curiosity in Grade 7, and Identity in Grade 8, our learners explored different Big Ideas together!

Learners collaborated with peers across year levels.
They communicated, listened, questioned, and shared ideas.
They discovered new things about themselves and others.
They make meaning through shared experiences.
And most importantly, they began the school year by building a stronger sense of belonging.

Our first Entry Point was not simply the start of a new unit. It was a celebration of coming together as a Middle School IMYC Community!

Three year levels.
Three Unit
Three Big Ideas.
One meaningful learning. 🌏❤️

And this is only the beginning! 🚀🎉
