If you've been to a Japanese izakaya, you may have seen Hoppy (ホッピー) on the menu—but what exactly is it?

Hoppy is a beer-flavored drink that's commonly enjoyed with shochu and ice.

And here's something interesting! 👀
When ordering Hoppy at an izakaya, you might hear some unique Japanese words like:

「なか」(naka) = inside and 「そと」(soto) = outside

What do they mean? 🤔

You’ll hear some unique Hoppy expressions like:

🍻 Use your Japanese at a real Japanese izakaya during our Hashigo-zake (Bar Hopping) event.

This month's theme is Hashigo-zake!

Over three weeks, you'll learn useful expressions for ordering food and drinks, asking questions, and chatting naturally in Japanese.

Then, we'll head to local izakayas together and put your Japanese into practice in a real-world setting.

🍻 Japanese Conversation at an Izakaya!

How would you order food and drinks at a local Japanese bar?

In this video, we practice a simple conversation between an izakaya owner and a customer:

「いらっしゃい！」
Welcome!

「なま(ビール)をください。」
Draft beer, please.

「やきとりがおすすめですよ。」
I recommend the yakitori.

「じゃあ、やきとりを5ほん、しおでください。」
Then, five yakitori skewers with salt, please.

「おまちどうさまでした。」
Thank you for waiting.

This time, we practiced useful Japanese phrases such as:

A：こんにちは
Hello.

Would you like some coffee?

B：いいえ、カフェインがにがてなので、だいじょうぶです。
No, thank you. I’m sensitive to caffeine, so I’m okay.

A：このコーヒーは、97%カフェインレスですよ。
This coffee is 97% caffeine-less.

B：そうですか。じゃあ、いただきます。
Oh, really? Then, I’ll have some.

A：では、￥500です。
Okay, it’s 500 yen.

B：はい、おねがいします。
Okay, please.
