Tools for Research and Teaching: An Interactive Workshop
This interactive workshop will discuss different tools and strategies to make your research and
teaching processes more streamlined and efficient. Please come ready to discuss where the
pain points are in your research and teaching praxis and to share how you have addressed and
overcome them. As an interactive workshop, you will have the opportunity to share the
challenges that you have faced in your research and teaching and how you have overcome
them. An incomplete list of possible topics for discussion may include managing grades and
grading, communicating evaluations to students, managing journal article PDFs, finding
relevant, up-to-date literature, synchronous and asynchronous online collaborations with
colleagues on writing and presenting, and whether and how generative AI tools may help to
streamline some of your processes. As someone who has been researching and teaching for
more than 20 years, I will facilitate the discussion and share some of the strategies that I have
developed and implemented that I feel have helped to streamline my processes. However, I’m
looking forward to learning as much as I share through hearing your stories of the challenges
that you’ve faced and overcome in your research and teaching.
Dr. Theron Muller is an associate professor at Waseda University’s Faculty of Human Sciences.
He received his doctorate from The Open University, UK in 2018, research that explored the
publication practices of Japan-based language teachers. He has published and presented
widely on writing for academic publication, English language teaching and learning, and teacher
development including in Ilha do Desterro, International Journal of Research & Method in
Education, and Writing and Pedagogy. He is a founding member of English Scholars Beyond

What Is “My Share”?
My Share sessions are short presentations (15–20 minutes) where teachers can share practical classroom ideas, tools, and techniques that other educators can use right away. It’s a friendly, supportive space to exchange ideas, connect with colleagues, and spark new inspiration.

March My Share’s Focus
We’re especially interested in presentations that explore:
- AI in education – creative, real-world ways AI can make teachers’ lives, daily work, or research better and easier
- Start-of-term success – engaging activities and strategies to kick off the new academic year

Other practical presentations are still welcome.

Whether you’re a seasoned presenter or stepping up for the first time, your ideas matter, and this is the perfect place to share them!

Sachi Oshima presenting Enhancing Oral Presentation Skills for Students with Lower English Proficiency: Leveraging L1 Japanese and Peer Feedback for Optimal Results

Are poor English performances among EFL beginner-level (i.e., at CEFR A1 level) students solely due to their lower L2 English proficiency? In Japanese university settings, teachers might have seen beginner-level students struggle to give an English presentation or write an English essay in an organized way. Their struggles often stem from a lack of knowledge or experience in organizing ideas (Oshima, 2020). As many variables concern L2 English speaking and writing (e.g., Hyland, 2019; Kormos, 2006), students’ inexperience in organizing their ideas is not only a result of their lower L2 proficiency. Still, the connection between students’ L2 proficiency and their knowledge in organizing ideas is worth considering.
The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how idea organization training can enhance the speaking performance and self-efficacy of beginner-level students. Drawing upon previous research on English presentations (Oshima, 2024), a Japanese presentation project was introduced to first-year students in the basic seminar course. By completing multiple presentations and receiving peer feedback, the students’ speaking performance and self-efficacy in L1 Japanese presentations improved, which is expected to transfer to their L2 English presentations. This teaching procedure can be flexibly modified and applied to various classroom contexts.

Bio:
Sachi Oshima is an associate professor at the Faculty of Law, Chuo Gakuin University, Chiba. After working for the Japan Foundation as a chief officer, she has been teaching English at the university level since 2017. Her research interests are related to TESOL and intercultural exchange projects.

Abstract
This presentation explores student perspectives on "banning" electronic devices in university speaking courses, alongside teacher observations of the resulting changes in classroom dynamics. It also considers the challenges of student reliance on AI and introduces AI-assisted activities that can be integrated into speaking classes. By incorporating these research-informed strategies, teachers can support students in developing their language proficiency and critical thinking skills while fostering a lively, engaged classroom atmosphere. Ethical issues surround sign the use of AI will also be discussed.

Bio
Mary has been teaching English and academic skills in Japan since 1994. With a background in Fine Arts and Philosophy, she brings creativity and critical inquiry into her teaching practice. An early adopter of classroom technology, she has a strong interest in the ethical use of AI as a tool for both teachers and learners. She currently teaches at Keio University, Waseda University.
