DOWEA Bechtel Elementary School Bechtel ES is a DOWEA Pacific School in Okinawa supporting military families. DOWEA is a field activity of the Office of the Secretary of War.

It is headed by a director who oversees all agency functions from DOWEA headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. DOWEA's schools are divided into three regions; DOWEA Europe; DOWEA Pacific; and DOWEA Americas. Each region is managed by a Director for Student Excellence. New Family Welcome Event

Families who are new to Bechtel Elementary School are invited to join us on Friday, July 31, for a brief welcome event and school tour. We will offer two sessions:

10:00 AM
1:00 PM (1300)

Families may park in the main parking lot in front of Ryukyu Middle School and Bechtel Elementary School and enter through the main entrance.

Principal Tefft will greet families at the entrance and lead a tour of the building while sharing information about Bechtel's programs, procedures, and school culture. There will also be time for questions. We would love the opportunity to meet you and help make your transition to Bechtel as smooth as possible.

We hope your family is finding time to enjoy the summer.

We are currently in TCCOR 3 and wanted to take this opportunity to remind families, as we have some students participating in summer programs and enrichment activities, about how DoWEA school operations are impacted by Tropical Cyclone Conditions of Readiness (TCCOR) 1, 1C, 1E, 1R and Storm Watch. DoWEA Pacific South District communicates changes to school operations in partnership with the installations we serve.

Please see the attached flyer for detailed information. We encourage families to follow installation safety guidance and monitor weather updates.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Mrs. Sala McNeal for being recognized as a Pacific South Teacher Leader Award recipient! 🎉

Mrs. McNeal is a fifth grade teacher at Bechtel. She consistently exemplifies what it means to be a true teacher leader. Whether she’s supporting her colleagues, leading initiatives, mentoring others, or going above and beyond for her students, she shows up with passion, professionalism, and heart. Her impact reaches far beyond the classroom walls—she is a guiding force both on and off campus, always striving to make our school community stronger.

Second Grade students participating in the static show. 💜💜💜

April has been an incredible month at our school as we proudly celebrated the Month of the Military Child! 💜

All month long, we honored the strength, resilience, and unique experiences of our military-connected students—our true heroes. From meaningful classroom activities to school-wide events, it has been inspiring to see our community come together in support and appreciation.

Last week was a highlight as we hosted our Purple Parade, with students and staff showing their pride by wearing purple and celebrating the important role military children play in our community. The energy, smiles, and unity on display were unforgettable!

We also had an amazing static show, giving students a hands-on opportunity to explore and learn more about the military in an exciting and interactive way. It was a powerful experience that sparked curiosity and appreciation across our campus.

To all of our military children: we see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate you—not just this month, but every day. Thank you for your strength, adaptability, and the sacrifices you make.
