I want to congratulate Biston Lowry on his promotion, earning his Gunji Taiho Jutsu Black Belt, and becoming a certified instructor. As a practitioner of Gunji Taiho Jutsu, Biston earned the Yūdansha after demonstrating both GTJ katas as the Tori.

Excellent work and much effort put into this promotion.

This article, written by Ari Knazan-Co-founder of Invictus, is a response to the introduction of the "SafeWrap System" by Rener Gracie, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) expert and founder of Gracie University. The system is claimed to be a proprietary method of lateral restraint that can be used to subdue an aggressive, suicidal, or emotionally disturbed person while minimizing the risk of injury to all parties involved. The authors of this article, who are Law Enforcement officers and certified BJJ black belts, express concerns about the claims made by Gracie University and provide counterpoints to their arguments.

The main points raised by the authors are:
The SafeWrap System is not a new invention, as similar techniques have been used in Jiu-Jitsu for decades and have been depicted in old judo and jujutsu textbooks. In the article, These systems include C4C PJJ, Officer Survival Systems (OSS), Sheepdog, Knife Control Concepts (KCC), Jiu Jitsu Five-0, Gunji Taiho Jutsu and Effective Fitness Combatives (EFC) just to name a few are discussed, and specifically the Gunji Taiho Jutsu Partner Assist Techniques P.A.T. system.

The claim that SafeWrap is proprietary and cannot be used without a license is problematic, as it may prevent officers from using the technique in life-or-death situations.
The concept of patenting a move is questionable, as physical movements are not protectable under copyright law.
The effectiveness of SafeWrap is not proven, as claims are not the same as actual data, and peer-reviewed testing is needed to determine its effectiveness.

The claim that no one has escaped the SafeWrap position is also questionable, as there may be counters and movements that can be used to escape the technique.

The authors conclude that while they appreciate the development of new techniques in Law Enforcement, they believe that Gracie University's approach to proprietary ownership and patenting is misguided and may hinder progress in the field. They suggest that instead, officers should focus on continually improving and refining techniques through testing and pressure testing.

It's worth noting that the article appears to be written from a critical perspective, but also acknowledges the value of civilian trainers and Law Enforcement professionals working together to develop effective techniques. The article also highlights the importance of peer-reviewed testing and data collection in determining the effectiveness of new techniques.

“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”

In October 2016, Total Air Force Combatives - Striking - Grappling - Weaponry Arts was published as my first attempt at developing a Combatives manual for the United States Air Force. At that time, I was stationed at MacDill AFB in Tampa, Florida, and Security Forces were seeking techniques specifically for arresting. By June 2019, Gunji Taiho Jutsu, a system of arresting techniques for Security Forces and Law Enforcement, was introduced with a full manual, video curriculum, and online instructor training course available at www.GunjiUniversity.com. Congratulations to Micheal James Rosenquist on his promotion in Gunji Taiho Jutsu. It was truly a team effort to bring together individuals from different time zones, ensuring the video feed was clear and understandable, and putting in a lot of work before the final evaluation today. Micheal’s understanding and application of the instructions learned from the certified instructor training through Gunji University were excellent. I was most pleased with the results and seeing the concepts and pedagogies in action. Therefore, Micheal earned the Gunji Taiho Jutsu Senior Instructor 2°. Additionally, the Yūdansha is also in order due to is application of the GTJ katas. All in all, I am proud to see Micheal embody and put into application the Gunji Taiho Jutsu system.

Gunji Taiho Jutsu: Gunji Taiho Jutsu (GTJ), meaning “Military Arresting Technique,” is known for its emphasis on zones of positional arrest and apprehension called PCS stages 1, 2, and 3. Founded by Prof. Tony Pacenski, this school incorporates classical and modern systems of jujutsu and military combatives to apply taiho jutsu through katas, drills, and pressure testing.

It was explained to me that Soke Miller during his Air Force career spent 18 years of 20 in Japan. There the recommendation letter by Soke Michael DePasquale Senior of the Yosh*tsune Jujutsu system granted approval to train with Soke Okuyama at the Hakko Ryu Hombu Dojo in Omiya, Japan. Soke Miller traveled up to 6 hour one way during the weekends to train with Soke Okuyama every week. However, for the first 6 months, Soke Miller was told to clean the dojo and watch. Not train; just watch.

In typical fashion, just when you believe paths will not cross, I finally met Soke Joseph Miller (Retired Air Force) last week. I had been trying to find Soke Miller for some two years now in Japan, and on that day introduced myself and physically took the food basket out of his hands so we could sh...
