The Lakeland University Japan campus is located in Ryogoku, Tokyo, just a 5 minute walk to historic Yokoamicho Park.

These beautiful grounds are a perfect spot for students to rest between classes and find a moment of peace in a busy city like Tokyo.

At Lakeland University Japan, there is no need to worry about a low IELTS or TOEFL level. LUJ offers an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program specifically designed to help non-native English-speaking students prepare for an undergraduate program at an American university. Open to both Japanese and international students, completing the EAP serves proof of English proficiency to LUJ, meaning you don't need to take any further tests!

LUJ is based in the cultural district of Ryogoku, home to Grand Sumo Wrestling and the legendary artist, Katsushika Hokusai, famed for The Great Wave.

Bridge or Gatekeeper?
Last night's Lakeland Lecture, presented by professor Midori Inagaki, explored one of Japan's most significant policy discussions: the growing role of Japanese-language education in immigration and long-term residency.
As national policy evolves, language education is shifting from a largely volunteer-led effort toward public infrastructure. But one central question remains: is language becoming a bridge to belonging, or is it acting as a gatekeeper?
Through data, policy analysis, and discussion, attendees examined how access to language education, integration, and residency are becoming increasingly interconnected.

Teams walk the Yamanote Line, discovering parts of Tokyo they may never have visited before, all while supporting great causes. This year, Yamathon is aiming for 1,100 teams, and LUJ is sponsoring three teams made up of students, faculty, and staff.

3 Questions with Student Ambassador scholar, Hester🌟
Hester is in her senior year of the Bachelor of Arts in Communication. She describes herself as explorer and shared some interesting insight of being an international student in Japan and LUJ!

⚪Q: What has been the most rewarding part of your LUJ experience? 

A: It's the connection that I get to build with friends and professors and finding out how easy it is to communicate with others in a community. I transferred to LUJ from a large university where we used to have 300+ students in one class, and I can barely interact with others as frequently as I want or build deep connections with friends. My professors & TA did not know who I was, as I was only a student out of hundreds, & I had to introduce myself every time I sent them emails. In LUJ, however, due to smaller class sizes, I get to ask more questions during class and discuss more with classmates; I can visit professors in their offices and get a lot of very useful feedback for not only specific knowledge but also learn from them and improve myself for my own future. Moreover, I made a lot of friends from all over the world, and they are not only amazing bonds that one can build with others but also helped me learn about different cultures that I never knew before. 

⚪Q: What advice would you give to prospective students? 

A: I’m from mainland China. Here’s my advice to international students in Japan: it is a great opportunity to be in another country, & I strongly suggest you seize the chance and see everything as brand new to explore, as if it is a long trip! I have had a lot of culture shocks when I first came to Japan, & as it is not where I grew up in, there are things that I might never adapt to, but understanding & accepting their existence is a great way to make this part of your life journey more meaningful.

⚪Q: What is your future goal?

A: I plan to graduate with B.A. in LUJ, then go to graduate school in Hong Kong. I plan to start working in large companies after graduating from school. My intended major for my master's degree is social psychology.

3 Questions with Student Ambassador scholar, Elfira! 🌟

Meet Elfira, LUJ's student ambassador who is completing her first year of Bachelor of Arts in International Business. She wears many hats at LUJ as student ambassador, student government association (SGA) representative, English club leader as well as a tutor in the learning center!

🟡Q: What has been the most rewarding part of your LUJ experience?

A: I would say that the relationships I made so far at LUJ have been the most rewarding. I’ve made strong friendships here that I deeply treasure and could now never imagine my life without them. Even on the rare days when I feel tired and don’t want to go to class, knowing that they’ll be there motivates me to go.


🟡Q: What advice would you give to prospective students?

A: I would recommend students to try and become involved with as many activities and clubs as you can. Being part of things like SGA, English Club, and The Learning Center have allowed me to gain experience in real world skills and navigate situations applicable to those faced in real workspaces. I was also able to apply the skills that I had before to help others and the community around me. Being able to do things like plan a carnival with my friends, execute it, and see it come to life was one of the highlights of my time at LUJ so far.


🟡Q: What is your future goal? Are you staying in Japan? Choose other global destinations? Are you looking for a career after?

A: Right now, I’m not exactly sure what I want to do in the future, but I do know that I want to do something that will help people, is creative, and have a fast-paced work structure. I’m waiting to see where the future takes me, and I am open to working and living almost anywhere whilst I’m still young — I want to see what works for me. I hope to build an interesting career in whichever field I choose soon!

3 Questions with Student Ambassador scholar, Moeed!🌟

Meet Moeed, a second-year Business Administration student and LUJ student ambassador, as he shares how LUJ has broadened his perspective for a global career.

🔵Q1: What has been the most rewarding part of your LUJ experience?

The most rewarding part of my experience at LUJ has been meeting people from diverse backgrounds and learning from their life experiences. I enjoy listening to people's stories because every person has a unique perspective and valuable lessons to share. At LUJ, I have had the opportunity to interact with classmates from many different countries, and those conversations have broadened my way of thinking and helped me grow as a person. These experiences have inspired me to become more open-minded and have strengthened my desire to build an international career.


🔵Q2: What advice would you give to prospective students?

My advice is to take advantage of every opportunity LUJ offers. Join clubs and build relationships with professors and classmates. Don't be afraid to make mistakes but learn from them. The more involved you are, the more meaningful your university experience will become.


🔵Q3: What is your future goal? Are you staying in Japan? Choosing other global destinations? Are you looking for a career after?

My goal is to build a global career that connects business, economics, and international relations. After graduation, I plan to pursue a master’s in management (MiM) followed by a Master of Science in International Political Economy (MSc in IPE) to strengthen both my business knowledge and my understanding of global economic and political issues.
In the long term, I hope to return to Japan and establish a company that connects talented people from developing countries with career opportunities in Japan. By combining what I learn through international education with my professional experience, I want to contribute to solving labor shortages in Japan while creating meaningful opportunities for people around the world.

Due to increased immigration processing times in Japan, we have brought forward the application deadline for students who require visa sponsorship.

📅 Student visa applicants: September 10, 2026

If you are already living in Japan on a valid visa, your deadlines remain unchanged:
• With transfer credits: October 31, 2026
• High school graduates: November 30, 2026

The Spring 2027 semester begins January 4, 2027.

Brand trust starts long before a product reaches the customer.

Students from both our MBA and undergraduate programs joined a special guest lecture featuring Mehmet Uysal, Senior Manager at Amazon Japan, on “Brand Trust as Strategy: Protecting Brand Value Through Ethical Supply Chains.”

Hosted by Dr. Seval Yurtcicek Ozaydin as part of the MBA course BA750 Applied Marketing Management, the session explored how global companies build, protect, and sometimes rebuild brand trust through ethical supply chain management, transparency, and effective crisis communication.

Students gained practical insights into the growing connection between marketing, sustainability, and corporate reputation while engaging in thoughtful discussions throughout the session.

A big thank you to Mehmet Uysal for sharing his expertise and industry experience with our students! We look forward to continuing to welcome industry leaders and experienced professionals who are making an impact in their fields, bringing real-world insights and inspiration to our students.
