Hello, my name is Conrad. I’d like to tell you a little about myself.
I was born in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and moved to Ireland when I was 29. I moved to Japan when I was 57 to study Shodo.

My hobbies are Shodo and Photography. I also am a big fan of anime and manga.
I study at the Japanese Calligraphy Education Society (書道教育学会).
I take photographs all over Japan, currently in an industrial area in Kawasaki.

I have been a teacher since I was 22. I love teaching and that has been my only job for over 40 years. That's me!

Hi, everyone. Happy New Year! How did you spend your end of the year vacation? I hope you had lots of fun.
I went to New York City for Christmas. It was my second time there at Christmas season and I can tell it's the best place to celebrate the festivity season.
In fact, New York is one of my favorite destinations in the world. I've lost track of how many times I've been there. Every time is a whole new experience.
This time, for example, I crossed the Brooklyn bridge on foot and explored more Brooklyn area, the most populous borough of New York City. I guess you all have heard about it, haven't you? Also, I tried New York's pizza for the first time. "Margherita" and "Mozzarella" were my choices. The slices were huge and delicious.
I went to many other popular places like the Central Park, Times Square, the High Line, the One World Trade Center, the Rockefeller Center, etc. Speaking of the Rockefeller Center, its Christmas tree was incredibly gorgeous, as usual.
Well, I had an amazing week in NYC and created many memories that will last for a lifetime.
If you have never visited New York before, I highly recommend you do it.

I wish you a very happy new year, filled with joy, prosperity and contentment.

久しぶりのIdiom です。
今回もBody parts を使った表現を練習しましょう！

“I like the new staff. It is easy to work with him because we usually see eye to eye.”
「今度入った新しい人はいいね。大抵彼とは意見が合うので、一緒に働きやすいよ。」

－to see eye to eye (with~) … (～と)意見が一致する

意見が一緒の時、目を見合わせることがありますね。
一つのことに対して意見が一緒のときや、また「気が合う人」という時に使ったりします。
いつも意見が合わない人を表現する時は、”do not see eye to eye”です。

“I’m afraid I don’t enjoy talking with her because I don’t see eye to eye on most matters.”
「何の話でも彼女とは意見が合わないから、残念だけど彼女と話すのは楽しくないです。」

Do you see eye to eye with your classmates or co-workers?

Body parts Idioms の6回目。

Here’s Rodrigo’s phrase of this month.
－Straight from the shoulder (= frankly) … 率直に、単刀直入に、ずけずけと
I prefer a person who speaks straight from the shoulder, because then I know exactly what he means.
「何でも率直に言ってくれる人の方がいいな。そうすれば何が言いたいのかよく分かるからね。」

でもハッキリ言いすぎて角が立つ時もありますから、少し遠回しに言う表現も覚えたいですね。

お久しぶりです。今回もBody parts が使われた表現の５回目です。

Here’s Rodrigo’s phrase of this month.
－Stick one’s neck out … 危険なことに首を突っ込む
Are you brave? Willing to take risks? Would you dare to stick your neck out?
Eg: “He has not come to school for a few weeks and I am worried. But it’s too dangerous to visit him living in that block. I will not stick my neck out.” “Let’s call the city office and have someone visit him.”

あなたは勇敢ですか？敢えて危険なことに首を突っ込む勇気がありますか？
「彼は学校にずっと来ていなくて心配だけど、彼が住んでいる地区に行くのは危険だよね。首を突っ込まないようにしよう。」「市役所に電話して、誰かに行ってもらおうよ。」

今回はBody parts が使われた表現の4回目です。

Here’s Rodrigo’s phrase of this month.
－Learn by heart … 暗記する
Writing kanji is difficult, isn’t it?
You must learn how to write them by heart, in other words, memorizing them.

漢字を書くのって難しいですよね…。
ロドリゴ先生は目下日本語勉強中で、漢字を覚えるのにちょっと苦労しているみたいです。^^;
日本語では「漢字を空で書ける」とか、「その詩を空で言える」とか言います。

I got the poem, “Amenimo makezu” by Kenji Miyazawa, by heart when I was in elementary school.
「小学校の時、宮沢賢治の「雨ニモマケズ」っていう詩を暗記したよ。」

I can tell all the stations’ names on Tokaido line by heart.
「東海道線の駅の名前、全部（そらで）言えるよ。」

ここでクイズです。
英語の動詞の活用形、全部言えますか？
① do ② write ③ sing ④ tell ⑤ buy ⑥ say ⑦ speak ⑧ cut ⑨ drive ⑩ fly
例えば、① do – did – done （原形－過去形―過去分詞形）

今回はBody parts が使われた表現の3回目。今日は忙しい皆さんに「耳より」な表現です。

Here’s Rodrigo’s phrase of this month.
－Be up to one's ears … 「仕事をたくさん抱えて、忙殺されて」

Haven’t you been up to your ears, recently?
If you have too much to do, the answer is affirmative.

皆さん、最近仕事漬けになっていませんか？
もし仕事をたくさん抱えていたら、”Haven’t you been up to your ears, recently? “ に対する答えは、”Yes” です。

E.g.: “I would like to go for a drink with you, but I can't. I’m up to my ears in work.”
「一緒に飲みに行きたいけど、行けません。仕事で身動きできないんです。」

“My brother didn’t help me with my homework…. He said he was up to his ears in homework himself!”
「お兄さんは私の宿題を手伝ってくれなかった…。自分の宿題に追われているんだって。」

“I’m up to my ears in work.” …「仕事にどっぷりつかっている。」

今回もBody parts を使った表現を練習しましょう！

Here’s another Rodrigo’s phrase of this month.

－All thumbs …　不器用な（=clumsy）
皆さんの5本の指の中で、親指（thumb）は関節が他の指より1つ少なくないですか？だから他の指に比べると、動きが悪いですよね？
皆さんの指が全部親指だと、どうですか？（気持ち悪いとかではなく・・・）
器用に物を作ったりできませんよね。だから、不器用な人のことを、”all thumbs”と言います。

If you know someone clumsy, you can say this person is all thumbs.
E.g.: My sister burned an egg again. When it comes to cooking, she is all thumbs.
「私の妹はまた卵を焦がしてしまったの。料理となると、彼女はとても不器用なのよ。」
