大の猫好きで知られる国芳は、戯画マスターです。
戯画とは、人間や動物を擬人化したり、事象を誇張しておもしろおかしく描いた風刺画・滑稽画のこと。国芳戯画の中でも、金魚などの水中生物が繰り広げる水中ライフの出来事を面白おかしく描いたシリーズ「金魚づくし」は、戯画の極みであります。

今日は、その中の「にはかあめんぼう」をご紹介します。
「にわかあめ」として空からふってくるあめんぼうの襲撃におおわらわの金魚たちです！

Kuniyoshi, a well-known cat lover, was also a master of caricature.

One of his most delightful series is Goldfish, in which goldfish and other aquatic creatures are humorously brought to life.

Today we feature Niwaka Amebo from the series. The goldfish are thrown into a panic as water striders come raining down from above like a sudden shower!

Adachi is the only publisher to have reproduced all 9 designs from the Goldfish series.

東京も間もなく梅雨入りしそうです。
浮世絵には雨を描いた作品が多くあります。なかでも広重「大はしあたけの夕立」は、ゴッホが模写するなど、世界的に有名です。

雨を線で表現するということは、西洋には無かった発想だそうですが、広重は激しく降り始めた夕立を２種類の版木で表しています。２種類の線の角度と墨の濃さを変えることで、リズミカルに驟雨を表現したのです。広重の斬新な雨の表現をお楽しみください。

Tokyo’s rainy season seems to be just around the corner.

Rain appears in many ukiyo-e prints, and one of the most famous examples is Hiroshige’s Bridge Ohashi and Atake in Sudden Shower -One Hundred Famous Views of Edo-, a work also known for having been copied by Van Gogh.

It is said that the idea of expressing rain with lines was not found in Western art at the time. In this work, Hiroshige used two separate woodblocks to depict a sudden evening shower. By varying the angle of the lines and the density of the sumi ink, he created a vivid, rhythmic impression of pouring rain.

東京では花菖蒲がまもなく見頃を迎えます。
江戸時代から現在まで菖蒲の名所として有名なのが、葛飾区の堀切。

広重は、手前に大きく描いた花菖蒲越しに、園内の散策を楽しむ人々を遠く描いています。花菖蒲の花びらの繊細なぼかしや斑入りの表現が大変美しい作品です。
本作品は、現在太田記念美術館で開催中の展覧会『歌川広重「名所江戸百景」　最後の挑戦』でも展示されています。

In Tokyo, irises will soon be at their seasonal best.

One of the most famous places to enjoy irises, from the Edo period to the present day, is Horikiri Iris Garden in Katsushika Ward.

Hiroshige depicted this garden in a bold composition, with visitors strolling through the garden seen beyond the large irises in the foreground. The delicate bokashi gradations and variegated details of the iris petals are especially beautiful.

まさに、NHK大河ドラマ「べらぼう」に見た蔦重の仕事ですね。

世界で最も有名な日本人の一人、葛飾北斎も、実は下絵を描く専門の職人＝絵師。そしてこの北斎さん、大変注文の多い絵師でありました。
さて、北斎は彫師や摺師、そして版元という仕事仲間に、どうやって注文をつけたのでしょうか？

このたび、浮世絵・木版画の情報サイト「北斎今昔」にて、『葛飾北斎伝』に紹介されている「北斎の手紙」の現代語訳を試みました！

Ukiyo-e prints are created through a division of labor among 3 specialists: the artist, the carver, and the printer. Bringing these 3 together and guiding the work through to publication is the publisher.

Katsushika Hokusai, one of the most famous Japanese figures in the world, was in fact an artist specializing in preparatory drawings. And this Mr. Hokusai, as it turns out, was an artist with very particular requests.

So how did Hokusai give instructions to his fellow collaborators—the carvers, printers, and publishers?

On Hokusai Konjyaku, our Japanese-language information website dedicated to ukiyo-e and woodcut prints, we have attempted a modern Japanese translation of Hokusai’s letter introduced in Katsushika Hokusai Den!

Humorous, witty, and yet very clear in its demands.
This is what we might call an “Edo-period business letter”!

そろそろ梅雨入りの季節ということで、本日は雨を描いた浮世絵をご紹介します！

広重の代表作「大はしあたけの夕立」は世界的に知られていますが、
本図に描かれているのと同じ「新大橋」を、叙情豊かに描いたのが「明治の広重」とも呼ばれる小林清親です。

雨の線を画面いっぱいに大胆に描いた広重とは対照的に、清親は雨線を描かず、雲の明暗や川面の揺らめきによって雨を表現しました。
同じ橋をモチーフに雨の光景を描きながらも、ぞれぞれの絵師の個性が光る作品です。

As the rainy season approaches, today we are featuring an ukiyo-e print depicting rain.

Hiroshige’s Bridge Ohashi and Atake in Sudden Shower is known around the world. The same Shin-Ohashi Bridge appears in View of Tokyo's Shin-Ohashi Bridge in Rain by Kobayashi Kiyochika, an artist often called the “Hiroshige of the Meiji era.”

In contrast to Hiroshige, who boldly filled the scene with lines of rain, Kiyochika expressed rain without drawing a single rain line—using instead the contrast of light and shadow in the clouds and the shimmering surface of the river.

Though both artists depicted a rainy view of the same bridge, each work reveals the distinctive sensibility of its creator.
