八頭身のきりっとした美人画で知られる鳥居清長は、二枚続や三枚続といった、パノラマのように画面が広がる浮世絵を数多く手がけました。
続物の面白さは、一枚でも作品として成り立ちながら、二枚、三枚とつなげると、さらに大きな世界が広がること。
四条河原で夕涼みをする女性たちを描いたこの三枚続も、その一例です。制作や販売の効率、採算性を考えた一枚のサイズを基本としながら、複数枚をつなげて大きなパノラマ画面を生み出した江戸の版元たちの発想にも驚かされます。
右側の図には、遊びに夢中になる二人の少女が描かれています。赤い着物の娘が手にしているのは「ビードロ」。もう一人は、水に浮かべた板の上で線香花火を楽しんでいます。
ビードロの「ベコンベコン」という音と、線香花火の「パチパチ」という音。
静かな夏の夕暮れに、二つの音が聞こえてきそうです。

Torii Kiyonaga, known for his elegant, statuesque beauties, created many diptychs and triptychs with panoramic compositions.
These multi-sheet prints are designed so that each sheet works on its own, while together they reveal a much larger scene.
This triptych of women enjoying the cool evening air along the Shijo riverbank is a perfect example. By combining standard sheet sizes that were efficient and economical to produce and sell, Edo-period publishers created expansive panoramic images.
On the right-hand sheet, two young girls are absorbed in play. The girl in red holds a bidoro, a small glass toy, while the other enjoys a sparkler on a board floating on the water.
You can almost hear the pop-pop of the bidoro and the crackle of the sparkler in the quiet summer evening.
