Respect for the Aged Day (敬老の日 Keirō no Hi)

This national holiday was established in 1966 as a day to respect the elderly and celebrate long life. Originally held on September 15, it originated as a renaming of Old Folks' Day (老人の日 Rōjin no hi). In 2003, it was changed to the third Monday of September in accordance with the Happy Monday System. This is an unique holiday to Japan but a great message!

COMPREHENDING THE NEWSPAPER-has been written for use in classrooms as a blackline master that investigates the structure and purpose of newspapers. Significant amounts of text have been provided so that the activities can be used as part of the daily language program.

It would be ideal if students had access to a newspaper while completing the majority of the activities, so they could relate directly to the specific area of discussion or investigation.
