Last week my studio Ebisu Atelier d'Art held our monthly community drink and draw event Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School, Tokyo which we hold at the ever so famous underground performing arts theatre Rosso 198 in Shinjuku. It was a verifiable Halloween Drag Queen Art Party with the gorgeous and amazing Stefani St. Sl*t presiding over the sketch mayhem as our muse, model, performing diva, and professor of q***r culture! Next week Friday Nov 1st we will be holding Dr. Sketchy’s EXTRA: Sh***ri Special. 2 models, one ripe tier. Come on out and sketch. You don't need to know anything about art to have fun with pencil, some drinks and a group of silly light hearted people.

After casting the principle character of Venus for a new painting of Venus and a Satyr at What the Dickens I finally got the model in the studio to start in on some prep work two weeks ago. I was still a bit uncertain about a few things so decided to start with a sketch and put off starting on the working drawing until the next session. I was really happy with the result of the sketch and as much as I wanted to continue on it with both the scale of the drawing and the nature of the paper it would not have been a good idea. Unfortunately when I got her back last week to start on the actual preparatory drawing I had had some problems with my materials. First I had unknowingly run out of my preferred paper (Fabriano artistico extra white hot pressed 300g) and then the paper that I did have, which looked pretty good, really did not hold up under my pencil. Though there are some things that I really like about this drawing, like the portrait, there are a lot of things I really preferred in the sketch, especially the rhythm and the gesture. I tried to correct what I felt were the short comings of the first drawing, like the length of the torso, but I feel that this one is now a bit exaggerated in that length. As a solution I was thinking that I could use the two drawings and combine them taking the best elements of both, but the good points of the first drawing outweigh the good points of this one which has forced me to just go back to the first one. I replenished my stock of Fabriano paper and have transferred that image to the better paper and will see how things progress when the model comes tomorrow. More than likely this is a case of one step backwards two steps forward. Either way I'm looking forward to see what happens next. This is always an unpredictable and exciting process.
Come draw with us on Wednesday!

Every month my studio Ebisu Atelier d'Art hosts what I like to call our community outreach event Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School, Tokyo which is a burlesque themed drink and draw held at Rosso 198. Running this event has been amazing. Really I did not know much about burlesque before first coming to this event, yet alone for many years that I have now been running it. I'm often contacted by international performing artists who are making there way to Japan and I try to include them in our event and connect them to the burlesque scene here best I can. Unfortunately sometimes our calendars and dates don't align and when that happens we just create an EXTRA event here, typically here at the Atelier. This is exactly what happened when one of our favourite showgirls BAMBOO バンブー told me that she would be back in Japan from Las Vegas where she is currently based. So on Oct 4 we had here here for an EXTRA event where she posed in full regalia for 2 hours in total over the 3 hour event. The studio was packed and a great time was had by all! In the week after I worked the drawing up adding ink washes to the figure to add some contrast while also drawing and inking a 16th century Persian pattern as a background. Check it out I hope you like it and please let me know if you do.

Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School, Tokyo our Burlesque "drink and draw event" happens every 3rd Thursday of the month at the very famous underground burlesque and alternative performing arts theatre Rosso 198 in Shinjuku.
Absolutely anyone and everyone is welcome to come out, make some scribbles, have some drinks and enjoy a good laugh. You really don't need to be an artist or know anything whatsoever about drawing or sketching.
Here are the sketches that I made at our September edition where we had Lily Merrybell, showgirl extraordinaire, pose and perform to our hearts content. It was an absolutely great time.
In two weeks on Oct. 17 we will be having our Drag Queen Halloween edition! This is certainly not something to be missed, so come on out to:

Busy days, but i managed to finish and transfer the perspective design back to the canvas before the model came Thursday night. That night I was able to get through the rest of the chest tattoo and get paint onto the rest of thigh, lower leg and foot of the one leg. Yesterday I only ended up with a short time to paint but a little bit of time went into the background to at least call it started. Certainly a lot more to come on this painting. A lot more needs to be done on the figure itself with only 2 more sessions remaining. Join us on Sunday for Open Life Drawing / Painting: Special Model: July 14 from 3-6pm
