We paid our final respects to IIlykata Hiroko yesterday at a wake that captured her bright spirit. Surrounded by her songs and the many people who loved her, it was a beautiful farewell. She was laid to rest today, we find comfort in our memories of her. You are forever in our hearts. 🌸

Singing (not just listening) can raise levels of sIgA, which is an antibody in your saliva that helps protect your upper respiratory tract from germs. The boost happens on short time scales — like after a singing session — and is measurable in saliva samples. These increases in sIgA are real and statistically significant in research settings, especially in group choir singing or active musical participation compared to just listening. But the magnitude quoted (“up to 240% in less than an hour”) comes from non-peer-reviewed or loosely referenced sources and isn’t a consensus number from multiple clinical studies. Some studies see increases, but there’s variation in how big that increase is and it depends on many things (like who’s singing, how emotionally positive they feel, group setting vs solo, etc.). 🧠 Why Does This Happen? Singing encourages deep, rhythmic breathing, which can reduce stress hormones like cortisol — and when stress goes down, immune markers like sIgA go up. Positive mood and social connection from singing (especially in choirs) also seem to help the body’s stress and immune responses.
