Jussi Anglesleva

Invisible media
It's pretty amazing how our public space has transformed in the last 10 years. Before, it was billboards, gradually screens, but now the sheer amount of media surfaces in the public that is moving image is quite overwhelming. And it doesn't end there: Many of these things are now reactive or interactive: they respond to the date, location, time, even people looking at them at the moment.
The real challenge of designers is to critically evaluate the role of these screens, what they are used for and how. It is very easy to capture attention with interactivity. But we should avoid at all cost an "arms race" of audience attention. This, of course, is already happening, but I think there's great potential for thinking differently of public media. Not as a channel that primarily tries to capture everybody's attention, and then deliver a message, may it be marketing, political, artistic or otherwise.
Echoing many science fiction writers, who depict a world where the interface disappears, I would like to challenge media designers to think of ways how interactive signage could become more invisible. Taking us to our aim without distraction...
