オーストラリアでは今週は「和解週間」(Reconciliation Week)ということで、姉妹校MSJ校では、U.S.A.の状況にも触れながら、学校としてのメッセージを発信しています。
Many of us have been shocked, horrified, and saddened to see and hear of the events occurring in the United States of America.
While these events represent the evils of institutionalised racism, it is important to acknowledge that racism is a global problem and not just one that is strictly reflected in American society.
This week is Reconciliation Week in Australia. In 2008, Australia made a step towards Reconciliation by apologising to The Stolen Generations for the hurt, pain, and suffering caused by European colonisation.
However, this is only one step forward to healing.
In 2019, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were 10.2 times more likely to be removed from their families than non-Indigenous children.
In the past 30 years there has been over 400 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths in police custody in Australia.
In September 2017, Indigenous prisoners represented approximately 27% of the full-time adult prisoner population, when Indigenous Australians aged 18 and over represented approximately 2% of the entire Australian population.
The detention rate for Indigenous children aged 10-17 years was 26 times higher than the rate for non-Indigenous children in 2016.
Non-Indigenous Australian girls can expect to live a decade longer than their Indigenous Australian counterparts.
Here at MSJ, we continue to pray for those affected daily by institutionalised and casual racism. As an inclusive community, we commit to identifying, calling out, and standing against racism in all forms against all people.
Racism stems from untrue and unfounded beliefs, spread through misinformation and a lack of empathy. Educating ourselves and others is one way we can all fight against racism- will you commit to educating yourself so you can build a more inclusive, fair and equal world for all people?
