From August 3 to 7, we delivered the course “Summer School for Molecular Biomedical Science and Diagnosis.”

Highlights of the course included not only lectures, but also laboratory training and interactive discussions designed to foster scientific knowledge and international collaboration. Participants gained hands-on experience and insights into current developments in molecular biomedical science and diagnostics.

From July 6 to 16, we held the “Introduction to SDGs: Awareness of Glocal Issues and International Collaboration”, organized by the Institute for Academic Innovation.

Taught in an omnibus format by faculty members from a wide range of academic disciplines, the course provided students with a comprehensive overview of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through lectures and discussions, students considered strategies for addressing global issues through international collaboration, contributing to the realization of a more sustainable world. From July 21 to July 24, we delivered the course
“Tracing the Truth: Modern Veterinary Forensic Science”, organized by the School of Veterinary Medicine.

This course provided an opportunity to learn the fundamental concepts and framework of “Veterinary Forensics”—an interdisciplinary field that scientifically and legally investigates incidents and crimes involving animals—through English-medium lectures and case-based explanations.

Students learned the integrated process of determining cause of death, handling evidence appropriately, and organizing findings for legal reporting and viewing animal-related cases as societal issues through a One Health/Justice perspective.

From July 21 to July 24, we held the “SDGs Field study: Design School in Northern Region (NJE3)”, organized by the Institute for Academic Innovation.

Students explored regional development and architectural/environmental design directly related to challenges faced by cold regions, with a focus on the Northern Hemisphere. During the course, students toured the buildings on the Hokkaido University campus. Participants listened to an explanation of the Faculty of Medicine Centennial Hall from Professor Ozawa, who was involved in its design.

Participants enjoyed seasonal Japanese sweets (wagashi) along with matcha, and connected with fellow students from diverse backgrounds. The event also included a visit to the nearby Sapporo Kaitakushi Beer Brewery, where attendees explored local history and culture together.

From July 28 to August 1, we conducted the course "Social Structure: Demography and inequality in contemporary Japan 2026". Throughout the week, students explored the socio-demographic transformations of contemporary Japan, focusing on critical issues such as population decline, education, gender, and labor market inequalities. Through in-depth readings, discussions, and final research presentations, participants critically analyzed the complex challenges facing the society today.

🚶‍♀️🌿 Campus & City Walking Tour

On July 31, we held the Campus & City Walking Tour event with more than 20 participants!

We first took a walk through the Hokkaido University Botanical Garden, enjoying the beautiful flowers and fresh air.
We then visited the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building (the Red Brick Office), where we learned about the history of Sapporo and Hokkaido in a fun and engaging way.

Thank you to everyone who participated and made the event so lively and enjoyable.

From July 27 to July 31, we conducted the course "Social Change: Sociology of International Migration 2026". Throughout the week, students explored the theoretical dynamics of migration both in Hokkaido and globally.
Through engaging discussions and assignments, participants gained a deeper understanding of migration within contemporary Japanese society.
