On 18 May 2026, IRCI held an online kick-off meeting for the project ‘Research on the Contribution of Intangible Cultural Heritage to Sustainable Development: Intangible Cultural Heritage and Ecosystems’. Case study collaborators refined their research plans through presentations, Q&A sessions, and knowledge sharing with specialists in both ICH and ecosystems. The event served as a valuable opportunity for stakeholders to confirm the project’s framework and set the direction for two years.

On 25 April, the International Day for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), UNESCO reaffirms its long-standing commitment to these 39 Member States and 9 Associate Members across the Caribbean, Pacific and AIS regions.

Home to around 65 million people, representing less than 1% of the world’s population, SIDS face disproportionate challenges from climate change, sea-level rise, environmental pressures, natural hazards and water scarcity. Today, more than 70% of them are affected by these risks.

Guided by UNESCO’s 2023–2029 Operational Strategy and its six Accelerator Programmes, we work with SIDS to strengthen resilience and advance sustainable development by turning knowledge into action, rooted in the realities of island communities.

Our support spans across sectors. It includes safeguarding biodiversity and cultural heritage through 25 in 13 SIDS and 38 sites in 24 SIDS. It also strengthens ocean governance, coastal monitoring, and the protection of living heritage and ecosystems.

UNESCO's latest report highlights the extraordinary contribution of its designated sites for both people and nature, which is the first report by UNESCO to examine all UNESCO protected areas such as World Heritage Sites, Biosphere Reserves, and Global Geoparks.

Something remarkable is happening across UNESCO-designated sites, and new evidence is bringing it into focus.

While global wildlife populations have declined by 73% since 1970, those within -designated sites have remained comparatively stable. And while languages are at risk of disappearing, these sites represent over 1,000 languages, with a quarter overlapping Indigenous Peoples' territories.

These places are delivering and .

The report, titled “People and nature in UNESCO-designated sites: Global and local contributions”, is the first to examine all UNESCO categories – sites, and – as a single network of over 2,260 sites covering more than 13 million km².

Organizing events and activities for the 2026 International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

17 October is designated as the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. On this day in 2003, the General Conference of UNESCO adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. UNESCO has launched a special webpage to mark the third edition of this day in 2026. All ICH stakeholders are encouraged to join the celebration by organising events and activities in the month of October 2026 to showcase the diversity and richness of living heritage and to raise awareness about the importance of its safeguarding.

‘Sustainable Research Data Collection for ICH Safeguarding: Focusing on Central Asia and Small Island Developing States’ Project Report (Part II) Published in March 2026

IRCI published the second part of its report for the ‘Sustainable Research Data Collection for ICH Safeguarding: Focusing on Central Asia and Small Island Developing States’ project in March 2026. This volume focuses on the collection of ICH research information in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The report provides a summary of data collection activities in SIDS from FY 2022 to 2025 and includes final reports from partner organizations in Fiji, Kiribati, Maldives, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Vanuatu. Additionally, it features a regional analysis of the ICH research in SIDS .
