Why do some countries remain poor while others become rich?

That's the Big Question in my Meijo University SOLE classes today. At the students' request, this is a long SOLE - 4 weeks!

Usually SOLEs around the World are single session activities. Students look on the internet for answers, and then report their findings (usually in English). But Japanese university students struggle with English and want time to perfect their delivery.

I've mostly done 2-week SOLEs at universities. We'll see how this goes.

SOLE Online will conduct a *free* multinational program for college/high school students.

SOLEs are a form of inquiry based learning discovered by Sugata Mitra in the late 1990s. He won the 2013 TED Prize for his research. Students research a topic and prepare English presentations with minimal interference from teachers. (Sugata Mitra calls this "minimally invasive education".)

We welcome applications from teachers of high school or college classes. We will try to limit the students to 10 high school and 10 college students per country.

Multinational SOLEs are a great way to practice English and learn about other cultures. Fill in the Google form at the bottom of this message if you are interested in participating. If you know teachers in other countries who might also like to take part, feel free to pass on this message.

Here are the program details for the Spring-Summer 2024 program.

There will be 6 live sessions on Zoom. The program dates are as follows:

May 22: Teacher registration closes. Teachers' meeting.
May 29 11am-12:30pm GMT: Games and socializing.
June 5 11am-12:30pm GMT: SOLE session 1
June 12 11am-12:30pm GMT: SOLE session 2
June 19 11am-12:30pm GMT: SOLE session 3
June 26 11am-12:30pm GMT: SOLE session 4 (part 1)
July 3 11am-12:30pm GMT: SOLE session 4 (part 2)

多国籍のグループでのアクティビティを通じて、海外の生徒たちと親交を深めましょう。　
イベント後も、参加者たちで作る学生専用コミュニティ上で交流できます。

■チームワークとインターネットで探究する「ソール」の授業。
前半では、生徒たちは多国籍のグループを作り、インターネットを使いながら、ひとつの問いについて答えを探します。後半では、各グループからプレゼンテーションを行い、全員でディスカッションをします。2013年 TED 賞を受賞したスガタ・ミトラ博士が考案した教育メソッドで、90か国、3300校以上で実施されています。

■読む、書く、聞く、話す、4技能に磨きをかけよう！
グループワークを通じて、あいさつに始まる対話、ディスカッション、
記事の音読、読解、質疑応答など、リアルな場面で英語を思う存分使って鍛えるチャンスです。
定期試験や各種英語検定にも役立ちます。
4回すべて参加するとデジタルCertificate（修了証）がもらえます。

SOLE stands for Self Organized Learning Environment. It is a form of inquiry based learning where teachers have minimal involvement.

Dear Colleagues,

Are you familiar with SOLEs (Self Organized Learning Environments)? They are brief, highly effective, examples of Problem Based Learning. Students are given a difficult problem to solve. They form groups, use the internet and any other resources they like to solve the problem, and then the groups present their findings - in English. Self Organized Learning is entirely student centered; it is extraordinarily effective, as well as being uplifting and empowering. A single session is usually 60 or 90 minutes.

My organization, SOLE Online, runs free multinational online 4-week sessions for high school/college students. We also have an ongoing program for elementary/junior high students. Our next college and high school sessions will be in September/October on the dates below. Sessions will run from 8:30-10pm Japan time. If you are an educator interested in participating, please fill in the Google form at the bottom of this message.

Here are the program details for the high school/college program starting September 29, 2022.

There will be 4 live SOLE sessions on Zoom. The problems will be connected by a theme (not yet decided).

We will try to limit the students to 10 per country.

The dates are as follows (all date and times are local to Japan):

September 22 8:30pm: teachers meeting on Zoom.

September 29 8:30-10pm: SOLE 1

October 6 8:30-10pm: SOLE 2

October 13 8:30-10pm: SOLE 3

October 20 8:30-10pm: SOLE 4

Students who participate will receive a digital certificate.

SOLE Online has prepared a Discord server for the students, where they can socialize freely outside the live sessions. After the program finishes, the students are welcome to continue using the Discord server to communicate with each other. We want to facilitate long-lasting relationships.
