Good morning from Miyajima.

An example of the incredible efficiency of this culture: last week (exactly one week ago), Mt. Misen’s Reikado Hall, which housed the 1200 yr old eternal flame (which was used to light the eternal flame at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial) burned down. This structure sits some 1750 ft up the mountain, near the top, which has no roads to the summit. The second picture is from today; the entire site has been cleared of debris.

And we made it up Mt. Misen! MANY many many stone steps (lost count after 1,000), absolutely no venomous snakes to be seen 🙄, and up 1750 ft in elevation. Then we chickened out and took the cable cars back down.

8 of us decided to sweat it out and make our way up Mt. Misen. We’re about halfway up…

On the way to Miyajima. Our inn is in the hills above the red floating torii gate.
