Welcome to the Osaka YMCA International School page! Since our foundation in 2001, OYIS remains the only WASC accredited international school in the City of Osaka. With the support of Osaka City Government and the Osaka YMCA, OYIS strives to be a leading provider of international education for the citizens and residents of Osaka and its environs. hool’ status offering the Primary Years Programme from Preschool to Grade 5. IB World Schools are schools that share a common philosophy - a commitment to a high quality, challenging, international education that OYIS believes is important for our students. As an IB World School, OYIS has also become a member of the East Asia Association of International Baccalaureate School Heads (EAAIBSH). In August 2012 OYIS was conferred with Gakko Hojin (School Foundation) status by the Osaka Prefectural Government Private Schools Division. This status confers legal recognition of our school under Japanese law and enables OYIS to receive a per capita student grant and enjoy a tax discount, as well as allowing our students to avail of discounted public transportation. Furthermore, OYIS has now been placed on the US State Department’s Office of Overseas Schools’ list of recommended schools in Kansai. In July 2013 OYIS was granted a new accreditation term of six years with a mid-term revisit by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This very welcome news endorses the programmes offered at OYIS through to June 2019 and is the result of very thorough preparation by the school community in preparing the Self-Study Report and an exhaustive examination of all aspects of school life by the WASC Visiting Committee. WASC accreditation is important for OYIS as it marks our school as a place where the students undergo a quality educational programme and make progress in achieving the attributes of the Learner Profile. In keeping with the overall YMCA philosophy of ‘Caring; Honesty; Respect; and Responsibility’ and in line with our Core Beliefs, OYIS provides a rigorous, challenging and developmentally appropriate educational experience for all our students that aims to develop internationally-minded global citizens. Our Preschool to Grade 8 student body, housed in a modern facility, led by a team of dedicated and qualified teachers, and supported by their parents, actively engages in life-long learning in a school environment, which in the words of our school motto, is a place ‘where learning comes to life.’

Our Story

Since 1882, Osaka YMCA has been a trailblazer in internationalization and education. Its first English language schools and university preparatory courses became a model for an entire industry of after school education in Japan. Today, the Osaka YMCA Educational Foundation is a leader in helping to transform public school education to be on par with the best international, private school education--once again promoting greater levels of access and internationalization.

At Osaka YMCA International School (OYIS), a private primary and middle school, we employ highly qualified, committed and dynamic staff who continue to trailblaze by imagining new educational programs that bring us closer to humanity's shared goal of a world of purpose and compassion.

Eighty percent (80%) of our students come from Asian countries, and 20% come from non-Asian countries. Approximately 35% of our student population consists of Japanese nationals. English is the main language of instruction and inclusion. There is international diversity in every classroom. From 2020, we will implement a pathway to high school graduation, creating an International Baccalaureate continuum from preschool to grade twelve.

Through the activities of our international schools, we strive to create bright and loving communities that cooperate, foster hope and live peacefully within society. We desire that all people will discover meaning and purpose in life and enjoy activities and continued learning. While cooperating with families and communities, our goal is to aid in the development of children, who are our future. We aim to raise children who understand the preciousness of life, and we will work to help people live harmoniously with nature and one another. We will educate people to work together to find fair and peaceful solutions to environmental, human rights and poverty issues--people who understand the value of assisting others in times of need.
