Tora-Jutsu is a living system and change is inevitable over time however, our core teachings remain the same. Take the young man in this picture. That is Grandmaster Toru, Akai Tora Sensei (John Morales Ekins. This was was his favorite shirt and he wore it the first time he officially tried the four hour horse stance. It wasn't pretty and it wasn't without a stretch or two but he did it. Today he looks much different. Older, fatter, broken in many places and no nearly so cool looking in a terry cloth tank top. But, I can still do what needs to be done and I do it in a way that is appropriate for my age, etc. . We are all on a journey of change. We all get older, we all change, and that is the way it is supposed to be. Do not judge yourself because you are too small because eventually you won't be. And do not become prideful because you are so strong and powerful because eventually you won't be. Embrace your life as it is and work daily to improve it with Kaizen. don't know what Kaizen is? Hey, ask google!

I have spoken many times of how i trained under Tonaka Sensei and how he used to train me in Sanshin or hardening excercises. Do you also recall me listing all of the injuries i have suffered, the arthritis, pains, joint aches, tendons, etc. over the years...Well,, DON"T do this but hey, if you want to know what it looks like...here you go. We DO NOT train like this in the United States EVER. Do NOT do this. Oh, and no I didn't ever break a bat with my forearm but I did have a lot of 1 inch bamboo smashed on them. We used 1 inch bamboo and dowels, branches, sticks, yep, it was the early days for sure.

What is the difference between a brown belt and a black belt? Color.

With the simple obvious answer out of the way let's look deeper at the three things the truly separate a Brown Belt from a Black Belt.

1. According to the philosophy of Tora Jutsu a Brown Belt is not yet considered a student. Until you reach the rank of Black Belt you are considered an "Applicant" with permission to study to become a student.

2. Black Belts typically instruct the class and Brown Belts typically translate that instruction for the students. Black Belts teach students how to practice and apply Tora Jutsu and Brown Belts teach students how to learn it.

3. Black Belts don't ask when they will be made a Black Belt...Brown Belts don't either. So in this case they are actually the same.

4. Bonus: A Brown Belt is the living example to every student of the how, when, why, who, and where of everything in a dojo.

There is a peace and a balance that comes from the study of the martial arts. In Tora Jutsu there is a peace, a balance, and a reason. When you understand why you are who you are and the power that understanding gives you is when you truly become a martial artist. We must know who we are and why we study or it is just exercise. Find yourself within and introduce that person to the world.
