卒業おめでとうございます。みなさんの将来に幸あれ！

ラオスに行ってきました。久しぶりのラオスです。

米国とイスラエルが始めた戦争の影響は、ラオスのような国にいち早く現れています。内陸国であるラオスは原油のほとんどをタイから輸入していますが、そのタイが原油不足に見舞われているような現状です。写真（逆光でみにくいですが）のように、原油不足への危機感から人々がガソリンスタンドに列をなし、それが交通渋滞を引き起こすようになっていました。

そんな状況下、ラオスの人々は、この苛立たしい渋滞を「ブン・ナムマン（ガソリン祭り）」と呼んでいました。この世では、自分ではどうすることもできないことがたくさん起こる。だったらできる限りそれを楽しめるよう努めよう、という発想のようです。まあ、ある種の皮肉めいた冗談でもありますが…。
ちなみに、このブン・ナムマン、コロナ禍の時も起こっていたようです。世界における様々なショックが与える影響が極めて不均等であることに、今更ながら憤りとやるせなさを感じざるをえませんが、同時にラオスの人々のたくましさには感服させられます。

ブン・ナムマンが、文字通りみなさんのブン（功徳）になりますように。

I recently visited Laos. It had been a while since my last visit.

The effects of the war between the US-Israel allies and Iran are quickly becoming apparent in countries like Laos. Laos, being a landlocked country, imports almost all of its crude oil from Thailand, but Thailand is currently experiencing a similar oil shortage due to the war. As the photo (backlighting...my apology for bad quality) shows, the sense of crisis regarding the oil shortage has caused people to queue at gas stations, leading to traffic jams.

In this situation, the Lao people were calling this frustrating traffic jam "Bun Namman (gasoline festival)". Their thinking is that there are many things and events in this world that are beyond our control, so we should try to enjoy them as much as possible. It's a kind of ironic joke, of course…

Incidentally, this "Bun Namman" also occurred in Laos during the COVID-19 pandemic. I can't help but feel indignant and helpless at the extremely uneven impact of various shocks around the world, but at the same time, I am impressed by the resilience of the Lao people.

May Bun Namman literally become your Bun (merit).

Nicca Aira A. MarquezさんがJASTE34で研究発表を行い、The Best Oral Presentation Awardを受賞しました。

発表タイトルは、The Risk Environment and Habitus in the Philippine Islands: the Case of Upland Abaca Farming Community in San Miguel, Catanduanes　です。

これまでの頑張りが報われましたね。おめでとうございます！

Ms. Nicca Aira A. Marquez has won The Best Oral Presentation Award at JASTE34, Fukui, Japan.

ベトナムに現地調査に行ってきました。現地で活躍している研究室の卒業生たちにも会う機会がありました。フエ経済大学に教員として勤務するNguyen Cong Dinhさん、フエ大学に教員として勤務するNguyen Quang Tanさん、そして、在ホーチミン日本国総領事館で外務省在外公館専門調査員として働いている渡邉大樹さん（写真）です。

みなさん元気で、とてもうれしくなりました。この仕事をしていてよかったと思えるひとときです。

Some of our alumni are working in Vietnam. I met Dr. Nguyen Cong Dinh (University of Economics, Hue University), Dr. Nguyen Quang Tan (International School, Hue University) and Dr. Hiroki Watanabe (a researcher, Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs) during my trip to Vietnam.

I am very pleased to see our alumni! It is one of the best moments for professors, I believe.

みんないい笑顔ですね。料理が素晴らしかったです！これからまた1年、頑張っていきましょう！
