BITS Lab held a party to welcome several new members, including Ryuji, Ning, Sheng and Mingshan. That’s Shofi helping out with the super-selfie. This was actually the same day as the lab cleaning last week. Thanks to all for cleaning and party preparations!

Last Friday and Saturday, BITS Lab particulates in JAIST’s Open Campus, when prospective students come to check out JAIST. Our poster gives an overview of our lab’s research, and even has the 3-interlocking circles, which expresses a simple error-correcting code in a graphical way. We even had a few “customers” who were interested!

We had a party to say sayonara to Siyu at Ippachi in Tatsunokuchi. He received a masters degree from JAIST and next month he will become a PhD student at Tokyo Tech.

Congratulations to BITS lab member Siyu Chen on completing his Master's degree at JAIST. He will become a PhD student at Tokyo Tech in April. Good luck, you will be missed!

Siyu Chen gave his Masters thesis final presentation on Friday last week. His research is a step in the direction of improving communications in wireless networks. He showed that lattices can be constructed using quasicyclic LDPC codes similar to those that are already being used in current wireless standards.

Welcome back! Anwar Khoirul, who was formerly an assistant professor in our lab, came back to our lab for a short visit. He gave us a spiffy medallion from his wireless communication center AdWiTech at Telkom University in Indonesia, where he is now director. He came with his colleague Suryo Adhi Wibowo, vice director of the center

The third day of ISTC’18, Urbanke gave a keynote about “how to design finite length polar codes”. After that, Siyu gave his presentation about “Construction D’ lattices from QC-LDPC codes”. It’s a really good conference where you can talk to many famous researchers.

In the afternoon, Shu Lin, the author of some popular textbooks of channel coding, gave a keynote about “a collective coding scheme” that shows simple Hamming codes perform surprisingly well under this scheme with only liner decoding complexity. BTW, Siyu happily took a picture with him at the welcome reception.
