I’ve had a great summer vacation so far. I’ve done all my favorite things, like eat ramen, go swimming and watch a movie.

On Sunday I watched the high school baseball tournament on TV. I was impressed by the level of play. The players withstood the heat and played their hardest until the very end. Even the losing teams can be proud of their efforts.

Oh wow, it’s hot 🥵 I recently started using the pool at my gym. It’s a good way to cool off after a hard day. I’m looking forward to the fireworks festival next week, but I’ll definitely be bringing a towel, drink and ice packs. It’s dangerously hot.

Today is American Independence Day. It’s a huge holiday in the USA with lots of backyard barbecues and fireworks displays. Hopefully it’s not rainy like Japan. However, North America is currently in a heat wave. Hopefully everyone remembers to drink water in between beers and hot dogs.

Tourism from overseas is exploding in Japan now. With then yen / dollar exchange rate, regular Americans can come to Japan and suddenly have deep pockets, enjoying luxury hotel stays and elegant meals.

On the other hand, the number of Japanese people traveling abroad is going down. It is heartening to see Japanese soccer fans in North America for the World Cup however. I saw a video of a young Japanese guy experiencing Texas barbecue for the first time. It made me jealous 😆

It’s time to declutter my life. I have too many things, especially old clothes that I don’t wear anymore. Maybe I’ll sell them to a secondhand shop. Even if they only give me a few hundred yen, I’ll be happy. I’ll use the money to buy something small and special that I usually don’t buy, like cheesecake from the conbini sweets section 😋

Diary entry / Saturday May 23rd, 2026:

Every several months, the high school students of Eikaiwa seem a little down. That’s when I know it must be test season at school, and they just got their test results back. Even though I’m sure they did well on most of their tests, it seems that our scores are never as high as we’d like them to be.

Unfortunately, that’s a pattern that continues throughout life. Whether it’s regarding tests, health, money, love, etc., there’s always some area of life that we feel could be better. Don’t forget to stop and enjoy the roses for a few moments. Take it easy on yourself. Tomorrow is a new day.

Living in Japan has completely changed my bathing habits. I used to just take one shower every day. Now, at the end of each day, I go to my gym or the local sento to take a bath. I sit in the whirlpool bath for a while. Sometimes I go into the cold bath. And this year I finally started sitting in the sauna for a few minutes. Then after all that, I shower off and shave, etc. It’s a good way to relax.

Diary entry / Sunday May 3rd, 2026:

It’s a bit of a rainy Golden Week so far. Nonetheless, there is a lot of movement happening here in the countryside and in the cities as well.

Lots of places are packed, so it’s a good chance for me to take it easy, do some cleaning and go to the gym. I’ve heard of 寝正月 (Sleepy Shogatsu), but am I having a じわじわGW (Gradual Golden Week)??
