Aoba-Japan International School (A-JIS) Aoba-Japan International School (A-JIS) is a pre-kindergarten through grade 12, coeducational school for internationally minded families residing in Tokyo.

A-JIS is a non-sectarian school, welcoming and respecting families from all nationalities and religions. We aim to provide learning opportunities that appropriately challenge every student, allowing them to happily learn in a safe and caring environment. We provide a comprehensive curriculum, addressing all academic areas, including: English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, Jap

anese language classes, music, fine arts, physical education, and technology/computers. English is the language of instruction at A-JIS. All classes, except for Japanese language classes, are conducted in English and use native language resources. For students who have difficulty communicating in English, or cannot yet speak English, we have a very strong English support program, where students are taught to read, write, and speak English in special classes (Intensive classes) preparing them to move to our mainstream program. In addition to the regular academic program, A-JIS also provides opportunities for students to participate in a number of clubs and extra-curricular activities to extend and enrich a wide variety of student interests and needs.

We had an incredible day welcoming back the Musashi University Tokyo Bee Club for the third year in a row! 🐝✨ Their students, who manage beehives on their campus rooftop, shared their real-world knowledge with our Grade 5 learners, connecting beautifully with our PYP Unit of Inquiry, "Sharing the Planet."

This year, they introduced us to the fascinating world of biomimicry—showing how nature’s ingenious systems, like honeybee colonies, inspire sustainable innovations to solve modern challenges. It’s inspiring to see students discover how the natural world can guide us toward a greener future.

A huge thank you to Musashi University for partnering with us again—here’s to many more sweet collaborations! 🌎🌿

Growing Together in Our Outdoor Classroom!
🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
After years of hard work and planning, our outdoor classroom is complete! This project has been a true labor of love, bringing together our Grade 2 and Grade 4 students to create a space where nature and learning meet.

From the early days of weeding and measuring to the final touches of planting berries and flowers, our students have been at the heart of it all. We were also grateful to have the expert guidance of Amy Holdsworth from Famulas Design to help bring our vision to life.

We can't wait to see how this space inspires creative writing, science studies, and a lifelong love for the environment.

Here’s to our future environmental stewards!

Congratulations to our Aoba dancers for earning TWO Gold Awards at this year’s KPASS Dance Festival Showcase Adjudication! We're incredibly proud of their dedication, energy, and passion on stage.

Aoba's arts program is woven into our curriculum, encompassing Music, Visual, and Performing Arts. We believe in the transformative power of the arts to boost confidence, foster collaboration, and encourage self-expression. For many years, our Performing Arts extension programs have enriched student experiences, and we extend special thanks to Ms. Nami for her decade of dedication in growing this at A-JIS, creating countless unforgettable artistic moments.

Many talented students will be back on stage this weekend in the Footloose production. Let’s keep the applause going!

Get ready to kick off your Sunday shoes! The After-School Musical Theater Club is thrilled to invite you to our highly anticipated production of Footloose Jr. The Musical!

This special, high-energy collaboration brings together the incredible talent, passion, and hard work of students from both Hikarigaoka and Bunkyo Senior School. Our performers have been pouring their hearts into rehearsals, and they are ready to absolutely rock the stage.

Celebrating Foundation Day!
[A-JIS 50th Anniversary]

From our humble beginnings in 1976 to becoming a leading international institution, our journey has been defined by growth, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to transforming education.

Here is a look back at the incredible milestones that shaped who we are today:

1976 – The Beginning:
Aoba was founded by Ms. Regina Doi as a bilingual early-childhood program.

1980s – Expanding Horizons:
With community support, Japan International School was established near Daikanyama Station, offering elementary and junior high school programs.

1990s – Growth & Evolution:
To accommodate a rapidly growing student body, the school relocated from Harajuku to Shibuya (1992), and then to Suginami (1998). It was during this transformative decade that we were officially renamed Aoba-Japan International School (A-JIS).

2012 – A New Home in Hikarigaoka:
A-JIS moved to its current Hikarigaoka campus, expanding into a full-service school complete with a sports field, gymnasium, pool, and spacious classrooms servicing K2 through Grade 12.

2015 & 2016 – Global Excellence:
We achieved prestigious international accreditations from CIS and NEASC in 2015, followed by official authorization as a full IB World School (PYP, MYP, and DP) in 2016.

2022 – Continued Expansion:
Our Bunkyo Campus opened as a bespoke Senior Campus for Grades 10–12.

2025 – Pioneering the Future:
Aoba Global Campus was launched, and we became one of 7 schools in the world authorized by the IBO to offer the Online IB Diploma Programme.

Present & Beyond:
Today, Aoba continues to foster a new generation of inspired international citizens. We remain deeply committed to our vision of building a legacy of bilingual, inquiry-based education rooted in global citizenship.

On May 18th, 1976, Ms. Regina Doi founded a small international preschool in Aobadai, Tokyo. From our humble beginnings to becoming a leading international institution, the A-JIS journey has been extraordinary. Today, we proudly mark this significant milestone with half a century of growth, resilience, and a steadfast dedication to transforming education.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of the A-JIS story over the past five decades—your support and commitment have helped us build this remarkable legacy.
