Asian Rural Institute

Asian Rural Institute Rural Leaders Training Center The Asian Rural Institute (ARI) is a training center for Rural Leaders . Founded in 1973 by Rev.

Dr. Toshihiro Takami the aim of the program is to invite and train local grassroots leaders to more effectively serve in their communities as they work for the poor, the hungry, and the marginalized. Each year from April to December we bring together about 30 leaders from countries primarily in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific to take part in our Rural Leaders Training Program. The training focuses o

n sustainable agriculture through integrated organic farming techniques, community building, and leadership. It is community based and hands-on learning is emphasized in all areas. Working together we grow and share our own food. At the heart of the program is the concept of 'Foodlife' - a term designed to recognize and value the interdependency between life and the food that sustains all life. To date, ARI has trained over 1000 rural leaders from 55 countries throughout Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.

The 48th Opening Ceremony was held at ARI on Friday, May 1st, with only ARI community members (students, staff, and volunteers) in attendance.
Unlike usual years, due to the influence of COVID19, we were only able to hold a small Opening Ceremony. However, after a lot of preparation and effort, the 2020 participants were able to give their self-introductions in Japanese. They also shared about their strong desires to learn as much as they can at ARI. Every day the participants are doing everything they can to make the most out of the time they have here at the institute.
All the members of ARI are looking forward to seeing you here again soon.

[48th Opening Ceremony: we have decided to postpone and host an internal ceremony]

In the midst of all the confusion throughout Japan and the world due to COVID-19, the Asian Rural Institute is still planning on holding it`s 2020 Rural Leader`s Training Program, welcoming many participants from Africa and Asia. Yet, due to the contagious COVID-19 we must change the start date of this year’s program. We will therefore have the opening ceremonies for this year’s program on Friday, May 1st with the participants who arrive by the end of April, staff and volunteers. Unfortunately, this means that we will not be able to welcome outside guests to this year’s opening ceremonies.
Other annual events in April and May will also be affected by this situation. We have decided to cancel the Old Book Market and English Farm programs with the hopes of convening them in the autumn or winter of this year. We also are not able to accept visitors and campers until the end of May. As always, we appreciate your ongoing support and understanding.

We thank everyone who expressed the concerns. We are all safe despite the big typhoon. On Sunday, we carried out HTC without any major problems and many people came and enjoyed and celebrated the harvest together.

10/10/2019

The HTC on October 12 (Sat) was canceled after receiving confirmation that the Typhoon 19 is drawing closer to the Kanto region and is expected to hit on that day. HTC on October 13 (Sun.) will be held as planned. In addition to the cancelation of the Saturday activities, please be aware that there is still a possibility that the events on Sunday may be changed as well.
For all those who have been looking forward to the HTC events, we appreciate your understanding and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.
