"About ten years ago, I had the privilege of connecting with ARI and have been involved as a commuting volunteer ever since. From a volunteer's perspective, I have actively proposed and brought to life various initiatives over the years. These include crafting original ramen using ingredients grown at ARI, demonstrating the martial art of Hokushin Itto-ryu, planting cherry blossoms in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and assisting with local beekeeping.
I truly believe that these experiences will leave a lasting impression on Participants' hearts, travel back with them to their home countries, and contribute to a brighter future. I would be deeply grateful for your warm support."

For many years, Mr. Miyake has served as a commuting volunteer at ARI, providing participants with a wide range of unique hands-on opportunities.
For the upcoming Westen Japan Study Tour (WJST) Campaign, he is supporting us as a Support Funding Partner by launching a sub-campaign to help spread the word.
This coming Saturday, he will also be participating as a honey vendor at the Ohinata Marche, which is being held jointly with ARI Friends Day. Please be sure to stop by his booth!

Observation of Hidamari Farm and NPO Bato Noson Juku

8月12日、2013年卒業生の浜中陽平さんの陽だまり農場と馬頭農村塾の見学に行ってきました。
「地域の資源を活用すること」「利益を求めるよりも、次の世代を育てることの大切さ」「自然の法則に従うこと」「無理をせず、自分の身の丈にあった活動を」「100％なんて求める必要はないよね？僕は30%でいいと思っている」など、アジア学院で学んだことと彼自身の哲学がギュっと詰まった農場経営とNPO活動について学ぶことができました。（文・写真　副校長 / 教務補佐 大柳由紀子）

On August 12, we visited Hidamari Farm and NPO Bato Noson Juku, run by Yohei Hamanaka, a 2013 graduate.
He said, “using local resources,” “the importance of nurturing the next generation rather than seeking only profit,” “following the laws of nature,” “not pushing too hard, but engaging in activities suited to one’s own capabilities,” and “There’s no need to aim for 100%, right? I think 30% is enough for me.” We learned about his farm management and NPO activities, which are packed with what he learned at ARI and his own philosophy. 毎年恒例、豊かな収穫に感謝するアジア学院最大のイベント。多国籍の料理、多文化のステージパフォーマンスや体験コーナーで皆様をおもてなしします♪

Harvest Thanksgiving Celebration (HTC), ARI's largest annual event to give thanks for a bountiful harvest, is coming again this year!
We will entertain you with international cuisine, cultural stage performances and hands-on activities!

【アジア学院と第二次世界大戦 ―西日本研修 農村伝道神学校での学び】
1973年の創立以来、63ヵ国、1,472名の卒業生を輩出してきたアジア学院ですが、特に卒業生の数が多い国を挙げると、インド、フィリピン、インドネシア、そしてミャンマーと続きます。これらは日本が第二次世界大戦中に侵攻し、多くの傷跡を残してきた国々でもあります。

アジア学院創立の中心を担われた故・高見敏弘先生（1枚目写真 前列左端）は、学院の前身である農村伝道神学校の東南アジアコースで、台湾や韓国、ミャンマー、フィリピンなどの、日本兵による被害体験を持った方々と出会いました。目の前で肉親を殺されたり、身体に銃剣の刺し傷があったり、殴られて片耳の聴力を失った彼らは皆、穏やかな顔をして、淡々とその経験を語られたと言います。髙見先生は、その時を、つらいというよりは、厳粛に、感謝を持って受け止めていたと著書に記しています。そしてそれが後年、アジア学院という、「共に生きるために」というモットーを掲げた、サーバント（仕える）リーダーシップを教える学校の創設につながりました。
毎年、学生たちは西日本研修の最初の研修先として、東京・町田にある農村伝道神学校を訪れ、学院のルーツを感じ、農場を見学するなどして交流します。

戦争の記憶が薄れる中ですが、これからも私たちは、昨年発表した平和宣言のもと、戦争の加害責任と向き合い続けていきます。

[ARI and World War II: Western Japan Study Tour (WJST) at the Theological Seminary for Rural Mission in Machida, Tokyo]
Since its founding in 1973, ARI has welcomed 1,472 graduates from 63 countries. The countries with the highest number of graduates include India, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Myanmar. Notably, these are also countries that suffered deep scars from Japan’s invasion during World War II.
The late Rev. Toshihiro Takami (First photo, front row, far left), one of the founders of ARI, previously served at the Southeast Asia Course of the Theological Seminary for Rural Mission —the predecessor to ARI. There, he met participants from Taiwan, South Korea, Myanmar, and the Philippines who had personally experienced harm inflicted by Japanese soldiers. Though some had seen their loved ones killed before their eyes, bore bayonet wounds on their bodies, or had lost hearing in one ear from beatings, they all spoke of their experiences calmly, with gentle expressions on their faces. In his writings, Rev. Takami reflected that he received their stories with a profound sense of solemnity and gratitude rather than mere pain. This pivotal encounter later led to the establishment of ARI—a school dedicated to teaching servant leadership under the motto "That We May Live Together."
Every year, as the first destination of the WJST, participants visit the seminary. There, they connect with the Institute's roots, tour the farm, and engage in meaningful fellowship.
Even as memories of the war fade, we remain committed to confronting our responsibility as a nation that inflicted harm, guided by the Peace Declaration we issued last year.

8月1日に始まったクラウドファンディング「隣人とやさしく生きる」。開始12日で、交通費・宿泊費・食費・研修費の目標金額に届きました。

支援総額2,202,899円。支援者147名。応援メッセージ125件。

この12日間、水俣のチラシに込めたエピソード、浜松・聖隷福祉事業団の「仕えるリーダーシップ」、広島・長崎の原爆の日に寄せた学び、そして広島平和文化センター元理事長スティーブン・リーパーさんの言葉——たくさんの物語を分かち合ってきました。125件の応援メッセージは、その一つひとつへの皆さまからのお応えだと感じています。

11月、22名の農村コミュニティリーダーたちが、皆さまに支えられてこの「西日本研修」へと旅立ちます。

キャンペーンはまだ続きます。学生たちの物語は、これからも配信していきますので、ぜひフォローして見守ってください🙏

Our crowdfunding campaign "Living Kindly with Neighbors" launched on August 1st. In just 12 days, we reached the full goal amount — covering transportation, lodging, meals, and training costs.

Over this 12 days, we've shared so many stories: the experiences behind our Minamata flyer, the "servant leadership" we learn from Seirei Social Welfare Community in Hamamatsu, reflections marking the anniversaries of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and words from Mr. Steven Leeper, former Chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation. We feel the 125 messages of encouragement are your response to each and every one of these stories.

This November, with your support, 22 rural community leaders will set out on this Western Japan Study Tour.
