Nagoya University researchers have found that this low-frequency environmental noise (below 100 Hz — about the pitch of a kick drum) can potentially damage kidney blood vessels. In a study performed in mice, the team, led by Takumi Kagawa and Masashi Kato from the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health, discovered that this noise triggers a spike in endothelin-1, a molecule that constricts blood vessels, leading to swollen, damaged glomeruli (the kidney's filtering units). A hypertension drug that blocks endothelin's effects reversed much of the damage.
The findings suggest pitch — not just loudness — matters when assessing noise's health risks, and point to new directions for understanding chronic kidney disease risk from everyday environmental sound.
