What to say when you don't understand Japanese? 🤔💭

Hi everyone!

When learning Japanese, it’s completely normal not to catch everything the first time.
Don’t be shy! 😳
Just use one of these super useful phrases:

• Mou ikkai itte! (Can you say that again? / Casual) 🗣️
• E? Nante? (Huh? What did you say? / Very casual) 👂
• Mou ichido onegaishimasu. (Once more, please. / Polite) 👔

Today, let’s look at some super natural expressions you can use right away while eating with Japanese friends or coworkers!

In today’s video, I’m having a casual lunch and using a few phrases that you won't always find in standard textbooks, but natives use every single day!

Here are 4 phrases you can use at the table:
• Itadakimasu. (Let's eat! / A must-say phrase before any meal) 🙏
• Atsu! (Hot! / Say this naturally when you eat something burning hot) 🔥
• Oishii! (Delicious! / Expressing your joy of food) 😋
• ~ppoishiru. (It tastes kind of like... / Use this when describing a flavor, like "Kōn-ppoi" for corn taste!) 🌽

Have you ever heard the word "Otsukaresama" (お疲れ様)?

It’s one of the most useful and powerful phrases in Japanese! It doesn't have a direct translation in English, but in my lessons, I always teach this as an essential cultural phrase to say "Good job" or "See you" at work! 👋

Here is how you can use it:
• Otsukaresama desu. (Polite / For your boss or colleagues) 👔
• Otsukaresama. (Casual / For friends or peers) 🗣️

【Japanese Mystery】Same Words, Completely Different Meanings!? 🧐✨

Did you notice!?
In the video , two common phrases are used multiple times.
But actually, their meanings completely change depending on the situation (who you are talking to and when)!

Let's take a fun, quick look at the "secrets of word switching" that Japanese natives do naturally! 👇

1️⃣ "Hisashiburi" Changes by WHO You Talk To!

Even though both mean "Long time no see," the words change depending on your relationship!

* 👩 "Hisashiburi~!" (久しぶりー！） → Casual
👉 Use this for friends, younger people, or people you are very close with!
* 🧑 "O-hisashiburi desu!" (お久しぶりです！） → Formal
👉 Use this for superiors, older people, or in business! Just adding "O" at the beginning and "desu" at the end transforms it into a polite phrase ✨

2️⃣ "Onegaishimasu" Changes by WHEN You Say It!

In the second half of the video, you hear "Onegaishimasu" over and over. But what they *actually* mean inside their hearts is totally different!

* 👩 "(Jaa,) Onegaishimasu" (お願いします)
👉 【Actual Meaning】"Okay, let's go! Please drive/Let's start!" (A signal to move to the next action)
* 👩 "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu" (よろしくお願いします)
👉 【Actual Meaning】"Thank you for having me today, please take care of me!" (A polite, humble greeting)
