TOPIC:
It's a good story, isn't it?

FOCUS:
Telling anecdotes as a skill for social interactions

LANGUAGE:
Preferably English, or other target language

LEVEL: Elementary ~ Advanced

PROCEDURE:
1. Explain to the students that telling anecdotes and stories is an important part of conversation, and something that can be practiced. In today's lesson you will tell an anectode of your own, as example and encouragement.

2. The teacher starts first by sharing something that has happened to them personally, or a famous incident.

3. Allow a few responses from the class.

FOLLOW-UP
Assign another student to share his or her own story in the next class.

This topic can be done until all the students in the class have shared their story.

TOPIC: PERKS & DRAGS
FOCUS: Discussing job descriptions
LEVEL: Elementary to Intermediate

PROCEDURE:
1. Write on the board:
One of the perks of the job I really like is___________.
__________ is a bit of a drag. (e.g. Writting daily/weekly reports is a bit of a drag)

2. Check the students understand the vocabulary. A perk is an extra benefit that you get from your job, in addtion to your pay. Typical perks are: a company car, or a laptop computer, or language lessons. A drag is something that is boring or unexciting and that you don't like doing. Typical drags are: writing reports, attending unnecessary meetings, etc.

3. Use the sentences you wrote on the board to give a few examples from your teaching job.

4. Ask students to complete the sentences for themselves, then compare it with a partner.

FOLLOW-UP
You can explore in a class discussion the different sorts of incentives that people get ( beyond their salary) and what would make staff more motivated, and also what to do about aspects of their work that they don't enjoy.
