I will be running an AST 2 and MAT (Managing Avalanche Terrain) 5 day course from March 15th to 19th. This is an advanced course for those looking to increase their knowledge and safety in the winter backcountry. We will dig deep into snowpack formation, crystal metamorphosis, fracture characteristics, Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale, avalanche and weather observations and start your journey into forecasting avalanche hazard. We will be travelling through avalanche terrain each and every day honing your route finding, group safety procedures and freeride expertise. The FWQ4 Freeride Hakuba 2021 went off with out a hitch yesterday and the competitors put on a great show. Evergreen Was one again a big part of the events success. I am well tired after 10 straight days working preparing the face, avalanche control, snow and face checks as well as readying medical supplies and choosing the right day to run the comp. It all went great and everyone was stoked!

Congratulations to the winners and to all the competitors, staff and volunteers for pulling it off!! See you for FWT 2022!!

❄️☃️We finished up the first AST 1 of Season 20/21!! It was a great crew of mostly Hakuba locals that all feel that they learned a tonne and that the course super-exceeded their expectations!! I was really taken aback by everyone's positive comments and even from those who had already done an AST back in Canada and courses in Europe to find this course provided just so much more learning! STOKED to hear that and to be able to assist in peoples journey towards safety and adventure! This is my 21st year of teaching recreational and professional Avalanche courses and I love it just as much now as back then. I have come along way from those days but one thing still remains the same...and that is the passion I have to increase peoples awareness of the hazards and skills to mitigate that risk...

I hope that more people will be able to join use on the next course from January 2nd to the 4th. There is already an exciting snow pack to investigate with much more...
