Art meets mathematics. How our elementary students created a scale model of the solar system using their own hands.
Our exploration of space took an exciting turn after our trip to "Miraikan", the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. The students wanted to recreate the solar system on our classroom walls but they wanted the planet sizes to be accurate relative to each other.
This is where the beauty of inquiry-based learning comes in. Instead of just painting pretty circles, the children embarked on a mathematical challenge.
They researched the dimensions of each planet and learned to use concepts like radius, diameter, and circumference to determine the correct scale.To draw perfect, accurate circles on a large scale, they didn’t use advanced digital tools. Instead, they creatively engineered their own giant compasses using just a pencil tied to a piece of string. Working collaboratively, they measured, adjusted, and brought the solar system to life.
