Following our study of large-scale calligraphy, EtonHouse Tokyo elementary students explored the physical demands of writing. By using mops and water to practice Kanji on the school’s rooftop, they experienced firsthand the strength and coordination required to manipulate a brush with precision.

This focus on technique continued during a specialist session at EtonHouse Toranomon, where students practiced stroke order and pressure on washi paper. This disciplined approach to "process" is now being applied to their creative writing. Students are currently in the planning phase of original stories, meticulously defining character traits, settings, and plot architecture to ensure a solid foundation for their narratives.

“We can — REPAIR!”

With the generous support of Patagonia Karuizawa, our Elementary students recently stepped out of the classroom for a hands-on lesson in sustainability.

In a world of fast fashion, we sat down to ask: What are our clothes made of? And how can we make them last? The Highlight: Using special patches, the children repaired holes in their own favorite clothes. The pride in the room was electric! When the Patagonia team asked what they’d do if they got a hole in their clothes at home, the students shouted in unison: “REPAIR!”

By partnering with local professionals, we show our students that they have the power to protect the environment. It’s not just a lesson; it’s a mindset for life.

Elementary School - EtonHouse Tokyo

A visit to the Azabu Library served as the foundation for our recent research into global symbols and scripts. Our students spent the week investigating the structural differences between fiction and non-fiction texts, sourcing informative books to support their understanding of Japanese characters. This led to a fascinating comparative study of linguistic history. Students explored the development of ancient hieroglyphics and practiced writing their names in Thai, noting the shared characteristics between diverse language systems. These research-based sessions are helping students see how information is organized and how human stories are preserved across cultures.
