Living on the Edge! RCAST, UTokyo models light at the interface of crystals
Researchers at RCAST, the University of Tokyo show how to construct a one-way waveguide for light based on the topological properties of magnetized photonic crystals, which may help lead to optical logic gates and faster optical communication
Building a One-Way Street for Light | RCAST
Scientists from the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo used numerical calculations to predict the optical properties of topological photonic crystals in a magnetic field. They showed that under certain circumstances, the light could be transmitted in one d...

Researchers successfully developed a small autonomous bio-hybrid drone with a mounted silkmoth antenna for odor source localization. The drone had a simple sensor enclosure that could recognize, in real-time, odorant concentration differences in a pseudo-open environment (outside a wind tunnel) and the directionality of the odor plume (stream). The drone flied to the odor source via a combination of spins and forward movements, by recognizing the odorant concentrations and their directions.

Photonic crystals: “even thin is functional”
Scientists from the University of Tokyo, the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo, the Kyoto Institute of Technology and the University of Twente discovered that even very thin 3D photonic band gap crystals are powerful devices to strongly control the flow of light.
Photonic crystals: “even thin is functional” | RCAST
Photonic crystals are the nanostructures that can manipulate photons by means of an energy gap, similar to how the semiconductors in computer chips manipulate electronic current. It was always thought that photonic crystals should be thick and bulky to be functional. Scientists from the University o...

Associate Professor Yachie’s team developed a new genome-editing tool | RCAST
CRISPR–Cas9 has sparked a revolution in the field of genome editing. In the CRISPR-Cas9 system, a guide RNA (gRNA) recruits Cas9 to a target genomic region. Cas9 then produces a double-stranded DNA break (DSB) at the target region. This promotes either gene deletion or transgene insertion through ...
