I didn’t know about this until I accompanied my tourist friend while strolling around Kyoto!

Have you ever heard of chirimen?
No, it’s not the tiny fish often eaten with white rice 😄

Chirimen is a traditional Japanese silk fabric known for its soft texture and fine, crinkled surface. This unique texture is created by twisting the silk threads during the weaving process. Because of its beauty and flexibility, chirimen has long been used for kimono, especially formal and semi-formal ones.

Among the many regional styles of chirimen, Kyō-chirimen is the most famous and highly regarded. It developed in Kyoto, where skilled artisans have refined the techniques over centuries. Kyō-chirimen is known for its exceptional quality, subtle colors, and refined elegance that reflect Kyoto’s traditional aesthetics. Today, chirimen and Kyō-chirimen are not only used for kimono, but also for accessories and handicrafts.

When my friend visited Kyoto as a tourist, I accompanied her to look for souvenirs. She loves cute handicrafts, and she immediately fell in love with all these Kyoto’s traditional crafts. Curious, I looked them up online and found that many of them are made from Kyō-chirimen. They were so beautiful and adorable that I couldn’t help falling in love with them too! Perks of living in Kyoto 😄

Did you know about chirimen? 😉🌿

Jokes tho it was actually really cool

I had work early that morning so I was fighting for my life to stay awake in my afternoon class when I got called on to try on the costume lol.

The professor also showed us a bunch of masks that have been passed down for over a hundred years.

The Noh theater is very traditional and the Japanese is difficult for modern audiences to understand, but the bright colors and dance are timeless in my opinion.

He taught us how they store the mask to preserve it for generations. They’re only allowed to touch certain parts of it when holding it, and after it’s used they air it out for several days.

This is part of a class at my university that takes us all over Kyoto to see how traditional businesses are holding up in modern times and facing towards the future.

What’s the worst case during your first time studying in Kyoto? Your university doesn’t provide a dorm, you don’t know any seniors to ask, you don’t know what to do.

Trust me, this situation happens a lot among international students.
You definitely need a temporary place to stay before buying your Japanese simcard, creating your bank account and finding an apartment.

Recently, one of my Indonesian friends in Kyoto shared her experience dealing with exactly this problem. When she first arrived in Kyoto, she looked for a place to stay for 1–2 months while searching for a long-term apartment.

This is not a paid promotion, but she recommended this place:

How to rent:
1. Visit the website.
2. Choose a room based on your preference using the map or the house list.
3. Send a request form or contact them via WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or LINE through:
https://j-stay.jp/contact.php
4. You can book a room even if you are still outside Kyoto. Payment can be made upon arrival, just explain your situation in your request.
5. Visit their office, which is about a 5-minute walk from JR Kyoto Station. They will take you to the house/apartment by car and help you complete the contract after showing you the room.
6. You can rent the room for as short as 1–2 months while looking for a long-term apartment.

According to my friend, they are very responsive, and payment can be made in cash or by card.

What do you think?

Doing part time job during your study abroad in Japan could be something important, both for financial reason and for our self-development. Don’t you agree?

In this post, I would like to share some ways to find part time jobs in Kyoto.
𝑰 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒎𝒚 𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆, 𝒎𝒚 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝒇𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒔’ 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒏 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑱𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒏. 𝑺𝒐, 𝑰 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒃𝒆 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒈𝒍𝒂𝒅 𝒊𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒅𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝒃𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒑𝒔.

1️⃣🙆🍒 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴

To find part-time jobs in Kyoto, my first advice is to rely on your networking. In my opinion, 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄, as they can vouch for the legitimacy and reliability of the opportunity. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆. You can do this by joining community groups where they gather (for example, in my case there is an Indonesian student's association who can help you in many things). These connections can be incredibly valuable, as they may know of job vacancies or can provide recommendations. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱. So, don’t hesitate to ask them if they are aware of any openings or opportunities!

2️⃣🙆🌷 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹

Another effective tip is to ask for assistance from the international center at your university. The staff at these centers are often well-connected and knowledgeable about local job opportunities for international students.𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀, 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀. Leveraging the resources and connections available at your university's international center can significantly enhance your chances of finding a suitable part-time job in Kyoto.

3️⃣🙆🌿 𝗨𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗯-𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝘀

Another great way to find part-time jobs in Kyoto is by searching on job-finding websites. There are several𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵-𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, which you can search by adjusting filters to your conditions (location, work types, etc.), for example:

https://www.yolo-japan.com/en/

https://nihonarubaito.com/part-time-jobs-in-kyoto

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗷𝗼𝗯-𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀. These websites often have a wider range of listings, increasing your chances of finding a job that matches your skills and schedule, for example:

https://j-sen.jp/features/19/prefectures/26

https://jp.indeed.com/?from=gnav-jobsearch--indeedmobile

𝑷𝒓𝒐 𝑻𝒊𝒑𝒔:
🍭 Before applying, please read carefully the requirements for international students to get part-time jobs permit. You can read it in Study Kyoto’s website:

Japanese strawberries are so good omg not a single one was sour. They were all super sweet!! Some were super sweet and some had more of a refreshing taste.

Don’t ask me strawberry names cause I was there to eat not to learn. The owner asked what my favorite type was and I had to tell him the long ones.

I think we paid about 2000 per person. I didn’t count how many strawberries I ate. But they were selling huge packs of strawberries for about 1400 yen out front. I got to eat several varieties until I was strawberried out for 2000, so I think it’s a fair deal.

This place is only accessible by car. If you have a friend with a car, force them to take you to Shiga for strawberry picking!

It’s not as glamorous as the strawberry farms in Awajishima, but it’s much cheaper.

Anyways, who’s ready for mango and melon season!!!
