Calligraphy Tools ⑤
In addition to the four essential tools
for calligraphy—the brush, paper, ink,
and inkstone—a paperweight and underlay mat are also indispensable.
⑤ Ink (Sumi)
There are two types of Japanese calligraphy ink: solid ink and liquid ink.
Solid ink is made by slowly grinding the ink stick on an inkstone with a small amount of water.
This traditional process creates the ink used for writing.
Liquid ink is ready to use immediately and is easy to handle, which is why it is commonly used in school calligraphy classes. It provides a consistent color and makes it easier to create clean, beautiful characters.
Solid ink, on the other hand, gives the written characters greater depth and expression.
As you grind the ink, its gentle, calming fragrance fills the air, helping to quiet the mind.
This peaceful preparation is an important part of Japanese calligraphy, allowing you to focus before putting brush to paper.
