Changemaker Series: The Future of the United Nations

The Department of Global Studies was honored to welcome Thomas Weiler from HSPV University and UNA Germany (United Nations Association of Germany) for an engaging lecture on the role of the United Nations in today's rapidly changing world.

Students explored the UN's four founding pillars—peace and security, human rights, development, and decolonization—while examining the challenges the organization faces today, including climate change, humanitarian crises, global conflicts, and financial constraints. The lecture also introduced the UN80 Initiative and the Pact for the Future, highlighting the importance of multilateral cooperation, innovation, and youth engagement in shaping a more sustainable future.

The session concluded with an insightful Q&A, encouraging students to consider how they can contribute to the UN's mission through advocacy, civic participation, and local action.

Thank you, Thomas Weiler, for sharing your expertise and inspiring our students to think critically about global cooperation and the future of international diplomacy.

9th Annual GS Model United Nations🌐✨

The 9th Annual GS Model United Nations (GSMUN) brought together 140 students to explore this year's agenda: The Global Refugee Crisis.

Working across four committees, delegates simulated international diplomacy by debating, negotiating, and collaborating to develop creative Action Plans addressing one of today's most pressing global challenges. Through teamwork and critical thinking, participants explored practical solutions to complex, borderless issues while gaining valuable experience in public speaking, negotiation, and international cooperation.

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to another successful GSMUN. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

Have you ever checked one message, then somehow ended up watching reels 40 minutes later? Or felt upset about a friend scrolling on their phone while you were telling a story?📱

You’re not alone.

Our devices help us learn, communicate with others, and keep us up to date. At the same time, spending too much time on screens can leave us feeling distracted, tired or detached from the world around us.

The good news? Even tiny changes can make a big difference.

📵Try taking short breaks from your screen during the day.
🚶Go for a walk without checking your phone.
😴Consider reducing screen time before bed to help yourself relax.

Digital technology is an important part of our daily life, but it’s all about the balance. By being mindful of how we use our devices, we can focus more on our health, relationships, and exploring new things.

What’s your screen time?
Write it down in the comments!!

Sharing Visions: The Heartwork of Kyoto Journal

Join us for a special talk with John Einarsen, the Founding Editor of Kyoto Journal, as he shares the story behind one of Japan's most fascinating magazines. For nearly 40 years, Kyoto Journal has explored and celebrated the creative life of Japan and Asia, built by a worldwide, all-volunteer network of contributors. John will speak about the magazine's origins and the challenges of creating an independent English publication in Japan.

Date: Thursday, June 18th
Time: 10:00 ~ 11:30 am
Place: Room 232, Building 2, Kyoto University of Foreign Studies

Also present will be 10 journalism undergraduate students from the USA who are in Kyoto for the month of June as part of the ieiMedia Kyoto Project. Students in the Global Studies Department and students from the Faculty of Foreign Languages have been serving as interpreters and cultural guides for the visiting American students.

Open to everyone: students, staff, and the general public are all warmly welcome.
