There is a miraculous world above our heads. The trees dance and sway as the wind passes through. Our forests are becoming lively as the snow melts, life in the mountains start to thrive and the birds start to sing. Spring is beautiful and so is everyone in its blessedly moment.

私たちの頭上には奇跡に満ちた世界がある。木々は風が通り抜けると踊り、揺れる。雪が溶けて山での生活が繁栄し始めるにつれて、命は芽吹き、鳥は歌い、森は活気にあふれ始める。春は美しく、この恵まれた瞬間にいるそなたも美しい。

- The Yaitopalé Story : A city without Gasoline -

When we look across the globe today, it is hard to imagine a society without fossil fuel. Many of our communities and economies are dependent on fossil fuel. We can always learn how our communities lived without fossil fuel by studying our past, but what would it look like in the future after all the technological, social, and academic advancements we have made in a globally connected world. While my stay at Cornell University, I studied and learnt how our dependency on certain resources could bring both fortune and famine. It could make a community rich, but it could also become the reason of war and turmoil. Without proper navigation, laws and regulations, this massive source of energy with human intervention could lead to the destruction of our natural habitat. My thesis and quest was to address this problem through architecture and the built environment. How will the ways we build change? What will our cities and towns look without fossil fuel?

今日の世界を見渡すと、化石燃料のない社会を想像するのはとても難しい。私たちのコミュニティーや経済の多くは化石燃料に依存しています。過去を研究することで、私たちのコミュニティーが化石燃料なしでどのように暮らしてきたかを学ぶことができますが、ひとつながりを持った世界の中で進歩を続ける技術、社会、そして学術がもたらす環境はどのような形をしているのか。コーネル大学に滞在している間、私は資源への依存が富と貧困の両方をもたらすことができることを学びました。資源はコミュニティーを豊かにすることができますが、戦争と混乱の原因にもなり得ます。適切なガイダンス、法律および規制がなければ人間の介入によって発動するこの膨大なエネルギー源は自然破壊につながってしまう。私の論文と課題は建築と造られた環境を通してこの問題に取り組むことでした。建築の作り方はどう変わるのであろうか。化石燃料がなければ私たちの町や環境はどのように変わるのであろうか。

- The Yaitopalé Story : Designing with Concepts -

Where do we draw our inspirations from?
What drives a design or a project forward?
The architecture school at Cornell University had an emphasis on the development of concepts to every design assignment. Concepts are ideas, theories, philosophies; they are the mindset that shapes the project. When we received an assignment, we were first asked to investigate the context of the site, which include the environment, social demographics, light, nature, and all the other factors that surround and make up the site. Then we were asked to think about the concept. Architecture and design is not only the development of function, but must embody beauty, poetry, and an experience that enhance the livelihood of humanity. This can be achieved through a harmonious dialogue between concept and context, between creation and nature, and between dream and reality.

インスピレーションはどこからくるのか？
デザインやプロジェクトを推進するものは何なのか？
コーネル大学の建築学校は、すべてのデザインと課題において概念(concept:コンセプト)の考慮に重点を置いていました。概念は、アイデア、理論、哲学などであり、プロジェクトを形作る考え方です。学校で課題を受けたとき、最初に、環境、地域、光、自然など敷地を取り囲むコンテキスト(敷地の要素)を調査するように教えられました。それから概念について考えるようにと。建築とデザインは機能の設計だけでなく、美、詩、そして人々の生活を向上させる経験を構築しなければならない。それは概念と要素、創造と自然、そして夢と現実の調和を通して達成することができます。

– The Yaitopalé Story : University –

After graduating from an international school in Kobe, Japan, I had the opportunity to study architecture at Cornell University located in upstate New York.

Cornell University is beautiful. Its libraries hold over 8 million printed books, and its architecture is theatrical and beautiful. There is something exciting about getting lost in a jungle of books. Being exposed to ideas, theories, research, and practices created and written by those that cared enough to craft the conceptions that shape the minds of the future. That exposure led to confusion, which led to contemplation, which led to discoveries.

It was in University, I found and learnt the core philosophies that helped me envision a future I would like to pursue.

神戸にあるインターナショナルスクールを卒業した後、ニューヨーク州北部にあるコーネル大学の建築学科に通うことができました。

コーネル大学はとても素晴らしい環境でした。大学の図書館には800万冊以上の本が保管されており、図書館の建築は演劇的で表現が暖かく豊かです。本の森をさまよい、自ら迷子になることもよく行ったものです。未来の感性と意識を形作る概念を作り上げることに気を配った先人たちが残した考え、理論、研究や歴史に出会うことでさらに迷子になる。迷子になることで混乱を招き、混乱することは熟考につながり、たくさん考えたおかげで発見に出会う。

大学で自分が目指したい環境づくりの基盤となる哲学を学び、見つけることができました。
