Pro-wrestling in Japan became popular shortly after World War II. The country was devastated, the people wanted to be inspired to restore the country after the war. Rikidozan was a vigorous and fearsome Japanese wrestler who came into light defeating huge American wrestlers, one after another, and he became a hero instilling pride and confidence in the minds of people. He was an ar
dent fan of pro-wrestling even as a child and his dream was to become a pro-wrestler. He memorized names of all
wrestlers, watched Billy Robinson, Steve Wright, Marty Jones, Pete Roberts and other wrestlers from England. He learned from two of greatest catch coaches, Roy Wood and Billy Robinson. In May 1993 with his dream of becoming pro-wrestler he ventured to trip to Billy Riley’s Gym in Wigan, England. He went back to Wigan again for training under Roy Wood in November 1993, February 1995, April 1996, April 1997, and May 2003 staying 6 months each time. Through the trips he was inspired to pursue Lancashire Catch-as-Catch-Can wrestling as his life-long quest. In 1999 legendary coach Billy Robinson came as a head coach to Yuko Miyato’s wrestling gym in Tokyo and started teaching catch wrestling exactly the same way as at Billy Riley’s Gym. Realizing that he could learn Lancashire catch-as-catch-can wrestling in Japan he moved to Tokyo to join the gym. He then went with Billy Robinson as an assistant coach/translator until 2001. He authored the catch wrestling technique book of over 200 pages titled “Lancashire Wrestling Catch-as-Catch-Can”. He opened his catch wrestling school at the end of 2006 and in April of 2007 Roy Wood named the school “Riley’s Gym Kyoto”.With his passion and dedication he is a leading force in revitalizing catch wrestling.
