MONSTERS RE-VISITED: THE FANTASTIC CREATURES OF JAPAN
The Center for Global Research Initiatives, University of Hyogo, Kobe, will host a symposium on yôkai and other fantastic creatures of Japan, featuring a special exhibition with works from Adam Cooley’s collection “Monstrous Dreams. Yôkai of Japan.” We invite presentation proposals focusing on yôkai that approach the topic from various perspectives: oral sessions presenting academic research (from the fields of folklore studies, literature, anthropology), or fiction (short works of fiction centering on yôkai), and performance presentations of visual arts. Presenters are encouraged to try to connect their works with Adam’s paintings (some of them can be found here, although the creation process is ongoing: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/x9cnshlt4960102yfjoes/h...).
Timeline:
March 10: proposal submission deadline
March 15: selection results
April 27~28: Symposium (onsite, University of Hyogo, Kobe Campus for Commerce)
The purpose of the symposium, in addition to connecting the academia with creative and visual arts through a topic of broad interest, is to create a volume of papers (both academic and creative) that explain and revisit yôkai from a 21st century perspective.

Symposium Day 3: practicing the air drum with Noh performer and author Atsushi Ueda
11/11/2023
The first day of our symposium was about innovative contemporary theater in contrast with more traditional performances such as kyogen and kagura.
The second day was about cosplay— amazingly detailed and historically accurate costumes created by award-winning Dr Emerald L King, and drag queens.
Don’t forget to join us today from 4pm JST for Dr Emerald L King’s fascinating lecture on cosplay!
