Farming for Everyone

The summer fruits are winding down and the winter ones are coming along nicely. Looking forward to pears and figs soon, and then oranges and persimmons in a few months!

Nice little haul of blueberries from the bushes in our yard. We probably have a lot more but the kids have been snacking on them constantly!

I got a bag of plums at the farmer's market for $2. They weren't that sweet so I tried baking them. It smelled amazing but still tasted a bit sour. I ended up turning them into popsicles for the kids. I'm going to miss fruit season in a couple of months.

This caterpillar was as long as my middle finger and about as wide! I wonder what it will become?

Found a preying mantis eating a tiny grasshopper in the garden yesterday. Good work, mantis. Protect the plumeria!

We no longer have a large garden but I have to keep growing! These are volunteer tomatoes and peppers from the compost pile. Free food is the best food!

A couple of pumpkins coming in at the school garden last week. These are compost pumpkins that we didn't plant, but we'll let them grow. It's always nice to get something for free!

The first cucumbers are just about ready at the school garden, considerably ahead of the ones I grew from seed at home.

Japanese stag beetle (kabutomushi) found by a friendly grandma at a local park in Kobe. My son was thrilled! We let it go in the forest on the way home.

It's mostly weeds now, but this has been my garden for the last four years. We recently moved so I had to give it up, but I'm going to miss it. Hoping to get a new patch of land soon!
