It is rarely discussed—especially by Japanese voices—that something important may be lost in the way English is taught to us.

The more Japanese learners are trained to sound “native,” respond instantly, be direct, stop being shy, and constantly assert themselves, the more they are subtly encouraged to move away from their authentic selves.

Fluency should not mean erasing nuance.

Confidence should not require abandoning humility.

Clarity does not have to become confrontation.

If learning English means adopting Western-style directness as the only valid mode of communication, then we must pause and ask: at what cost?

In my view what the world needs now is not more individualistic ego-assertion, but a form of communication that harmonizes differences.

English can be a bridge.
But only if we allow diverse cultural expressions to exist within it.

What's wrong about being indirect, humble, less joking in English??

途上国なのに腹八分が通じない　明日へ向けて備えない　給料日にほぼ使ってしまう　無くなったら人から借りて、返さない　貧しいのに分不相応な誕生会で見栄をはる------日本人のお手本たる自覚は大丈夫か？

In many developing countries, the idea of moderation—like eating only until you’re 80% full—isn’t a common concept.

People often live for today: spending most of their salary on payday, borrowing when money runs out, and celebrating birthdays or festivals with full generosity, even beyond their means.

There’s beauty in that joy and community spirit. Yet it also reminds us of the value of foresight and self-discipline.

Do we Japanese still see ourselves as role models in this sense of responsibility?
