【本日のフレーズ】Like a boss

ボブ:Can you believe how well his presentation went?(彼のプレゼンあんなにうまくいくなんて信じられるかい?)
アリス:I know, right? He was all nervous before, but he stepped up and gave that speech like a boss!(ほんとよね!プレゼン前はあんなに緊張してたのに、壇上であんなに堂々とスピーチをやり遂げるなんて!)

リーダーであるボスは何事もうまくできるはずですよね!そのようなことから、"like a boss" ボスのように何かをするということは、非常に堂々と何かを成し遂げる様子を表します。時にはジョークとして、簡単なことや馬鹿げたこと対して、このフレーズを使う場合もあります。

Phrase of the Day: Like a boss

Bob: Can you believe how well his presentation went?
Alice: I know, right? He was all nervous before, but he stepped up and gave that speech like a boss!

The boss is the leader, right? So if he's the boss, he should do things well. In this way, doing something "like a boss" means doing something incredibly impressively. We'll sometimes even use it for really simple or stupid things as a kind of joke.

Flash Card Game: Card Flip

This is a game for two or more people that requires each of them to have a set of the same flash cards. It's a quick paced game that's good for practicing phonics or vocab. Each person will also need something like a stuffed toy, an eraser, or some other item. Everybody sits in a circle and shuffles their cards. Whoever's turn it is puts their item in the middle. Then everbody counts 1..2..3 and on 3 flips their top card over and says it. If there's no match, count to 3 and flip another card. If two people have cards that match, they then try to take the item in the middle. Continue until everybody's items have been claimed or until you run out of cards.

【本日のフレーズ】All systems go ボブ:新しい製品の準備はできてるのかい?

アリス:冗談でしょ!もう準備万端よ! "All systems go" というフレーズは元々ロケットが打ち上げる用意ができているというときに使われていました。それと同じようになにか準備万端のときに、この"all systems go"が使えます!ぜひ使ってみてくださいね!

Phrase of the Day: All systems go

Bob: Are you guys in the factory ready for the new product launch?

Alice: Are you kidding? We are all systems go down here. "All systems go" was originally used when they wanted to say that rockets were ready to launch. In the same way, we say things are "all systems go" when we are ready for something.

Coming Soon: Extensive Reading

There are two parts to communication: input and output. Input is taking in language through reading and listening. Output is using language through speaking and writing. Ideally, you should have a fairly even amount of these two, and in all four varieties and we try to balance those in class here at MY. However, one of the things that we've found really helps students improve their communication abilities is lots of input, and one of the best ways we've found to be able to do this is through "Extensive Reading". If you aren't familiar with ER, it means reading A LOT, but, in particular, reading a lot of books that interest you, at or just aboveyour level so that you don't really need a dictionary. This is something that you can do at home, of course, but getting the right books can be difficult, especially for people just beginning their education. For that reason, we are proud to announce that, from April 2018, we will be opening an Extensive Reading class for our elementary students here at MY English School's Yamash*taekimae location. If you would like more information, we will be talking about our classes, including the new Extensive Reading class, during our Demo Lesson presentations on January 27th from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Space is limited, so to reserve a spot please email us at [email protected] or call us at 0120-43-6944. We look forward to seeing you there!

Demo Lesson Next Saturday

One thing we often do in January is make plans for our future. The start of a new year is a time to think about where we are and where we want to be. How much do you want to bet that you - or your children - will need to be able to use English in the future? Maybe for school or work. Maybe for travel or a hobby. There are a lot of ways that people use English, and we'd love to help you and your family prepare for that future by learning to use English from today! We have free elementary demo lessons scheduled for next Saturday, January 27th, 2018, starting at 2pm. Come and see how we teach, and experience for yourself what a school of educationally-minded professionals can do for you. If you're interested in attending, please email [email protected] or call 0120-43-6944 to make your appointment. There are only a few spaces available, so sign up soon.

【お家でできる英語の遊び:神経衰弱】

前の投稿で少し触れましたが、今回はお家でできるフラッシュカードゲームを紹介します!皆さん神経衰弱をしたことがあるはずです。それを2人用に少しアレンジしたものです。それぞれカードの束を用意し、順番の人が1枚のカードを出し、質問をします。(What is it? または自分が練習したいフレーズで質問してみよう。)もう一人がカードを出し、正しく質問に答えます。(What is it? と聞かれたら、答えはIt's a...ですね!)もし2人が出したカードが同じだったらカードを脇に省きます。もし違うカードでしたら、手元にカードを戻してください。これが1つの流れで、次の人がまたカードを出して質問します。全てのカードがマッチするまでゲームを続けます。お家でぜひやってみてくださいね!

Flashcard Game: Buddy Memory

As promised before, we're going to talk about some games you can play at home using flashcards. We've all played Memory before. This is a slight variation on that game for two people. Each person has one set of cards. After they set up their cards, whoever's turn it is flips over one of their cards and asks a question (for example, "What is it?" or any other target language you want to practice). The other person flips a card over and answer appropriately (for "What is it?", the answer would be "It's a...") If the cards match, then take the cards out. If not, flip the cards back over. Then it's the next person's turn. Continue playing until all of the cards have been matched.
