Tenshinsho Jigen Ryu

Tenshinsho Jigen Ryu Tenshinsho Jigen Ryu Hyohou (天眞正自源流兵法) is an old classical Japanese martial arts school (koryu, 古流) still active today.

The system was founded in early 1500s during the Eishō (Muromachi period) (永正室町時代, 1504–1521) 天眞正自源流兵法は、室町時代の開祖、瀬戸口備前守政基が、白源流、関東七流、つくもかみ流、顕流、天眞流、香取神道流などを修め、西暦1508年（永正五年）に創始確立した日本剣法です。日本剣法千年の術理と日本精神を継承して、戦国時代から現代に至る歴史を歩んで参りました。

流儀の遠源は西暦931年（丞平弐年）に自源齋一任自一坊が創始した上古流鹿島之太刀白源流と伝えられています。これは、西暦九三一年・朱雀天皇の時代の丞平二年のことであり、即ち、平将門の反乱と時代を同じくします。鹿島之太刀は、仁徳天皇の時代五世紀前半に同地の人物・國摩真人が鹿島『高天原』に祭壇を設けて祈祷を行い鹿島の大神より授けられた『神妙剣』を骨

子とする我国初の流儀です。

自源齋一任自一坊の自源流から四百年・室町時代の頃、開祖瀬戸口備前守政基（かいそせとぐちびぜんのかみまさもと）は流儀に工夫を凝らして天眞正自源流を創始し、流儀の思想と剣の理法を三巻に纏め次代に継承しました。流儀の思想は源義経が鹿島神宮に奉納した龍虎二巻の武道極意を基本とするものであり、流儀兵法は、弓馬は本より、槍術、長巻術、和術等を網羅し、居合術を流儀武術の本法としております。

居合術全盛の時代に確立された当流儀の法形は、全て脇差帯刀の状態から発揮されるのが流儀本来の姿です。流儀に伝承される天地人三段の法形は日本剣法の根源であり、真剣で実践する神速の日本剣法は武の極致であり、その法形は日本伝統武術に於ける殺人刀活人剣の真の精神と術理を顕すものです。
天眞正自源流兵法総合武道源心会では、人間形成を最大の目標として技術から学び始めます。剣の理法を初めとして、体術は護身術的要素を持っており、全てを総合的に学ぶことによって、人格を高めてまいります。万物共生・万有愛護・剣人一体を根本として、技術の上達を図ると同時に人格の向上を求め不動心を養成するものです。

天眞正自源流の神速の抜き付けと納刀は精神の集中力を極め、不用意に行えば我が身を自分自身で切り裂く事になります。故に、精神の充実と効用は武道本来の姿となり心技体が完成される事になるのです。真剣刀法は精神の充実無くしては出来ません。例え少年少女であっても、その充実度は成人を凌ぐ場合があります。

現在、埼玉県春日部市において、第二十九代上野童心宗家を中心に、上野景範最高師範の下で流儀の精神である『心和』の精神を伝えるべく、国際的に指導が行われております。

It is with much sadness that we report that the Tenshinsho Jigen Ryu has lost a great friend and brother in Tom McDermott. Sensei McDermott passed away last evening at 5:15 PM due to complications from severe injuries received in a traffic accident on June 2nd, 2018.
Many may not know or remember that Sensei McDermott was mainly responsible for introducing us in the United States to Kagenori Ueno Saikoh Shihan and the beautiful art of Tenshinsho Jigen Ryu, either directly or indirectly, through his efforts to bring Ueno Soke and Ueno Saikoh Shihan to Virginia for seminars.
While he was not as active in the Ryu in recent years due to being a single parent to three young teenagers, his heart was always with Tenshinsho Jigen Ryu, and he often talked of returning to Japan to train directly under Ueno Saikoh Shihan. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service is being planned.

The Shoko Shuseikan Museum is going back to the warring states period this summer!
Between July 29th and September 21st a display featuring the generals of the Shimadzu clan will be held in the Shoko Shuseikan Annex. The display features the artwork of renowned artist Nagano Tsuyoshi - famous for his work on Star Wars, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Nobunaga's Ambition as well as scrolls, screens, letters and armour used by the great men themselves.
Entry to the exhibition is free with a ticket to Sengan-en, so make sure not to miss out on this rare opportunity to experience one of Japan's most legendary samurai clans!
