Explore Sustainable Practices in Osaki town
We are planning onr-day field trip to Osaki town, a pioneering municipality in environmental sustainability. Located in the heart of the Osumi Peninsula and facing Shibushi Bay in eastern Kagoshima, Osaki town has a population of approximately 12,000. The community's economy is rooted in primary industries such as livestock, agriculture, and fisheries.
Faced with the imminent exhaustion of landfill capacity in 1998, Osaki town initiated a rigorous separation and recycling program aimed at extending landfill life. These efforts have led to the town achieving a remarkable 83.1% waste recycling rate, earning it the title of Japan’s leader in resource recycling for 14 times, including 12 years in a row. This commitment to sustainable waste management practices also garnered Osaki town the prestigious Japan SDGs Award in 2018, making it the only municipality to receive the honor that year.
Field Trip Details:
• Date & Time: July 30. Departs at 8:30 AM from Kagoshima University and returns by 5 PM.
• Fee: Only lunch bento fee (about 1000 yen) Halal bento available.
