英語でも日本語でも、あるいはその両方でも！「第64回岩国スピーチコンテスト」は、自分自身に挑戦し、自信を深め、あなたのストーリーを共有する絶好のチャンスです。

この恒例イベントは、語学学習や文化交流、そして「居心地の良い場所（コンフォートゾーン）」から一歩踏み出す勇気を称えるものです。学生の方も、社会人の方も、語学学習の経験が豊富な方も、ぜひステージに立ち、楽しく温かい雰囲気の中でその成果を披露してください。

このコンテストの大きな魅力の一つは、準備期間中ずっとスピーチの指導や語学面でのサポートが受けられることです。メンターが、アイデアの構築、スピーチの構成・推敲、文法や発音の改善、そして本番で成功するための自信を育むお手伝いをします。一人で悩む必要はありません！

🎤 Could YOU give a speech in a foreign language? 🌏✨

Whether it's English, Japanese, or both, now's your chance to challenge yourself, build confidence, and share your story at the 64th Annual Iwakuni Speech Contest!

This annual event celebrates language learning, cultural exchange, and the courage to step outside your comfort zone. Whether you're a student, an adult, or an experienced language learner, we invite you to take the stage and showcase your skills in a fun and supportive environment.

💡 Not sure where to start? We've got you covered!

One of the best parts of this contest is that speech mentorship and language assistance are available throughout the preparation process. Mentors can help you develop your ideas, edit your speech, improve grammar, refine pronunciation, and build the confidence you need to succeed. You don't have to do it alone!

🤝 Building Stronger Connections for Our Community

The Japanese American Society of Iwakuni (JAS) recently had the pleasure of meeting with Iwakuni City Board of Education Superintendent Toshiharu Moriyama.

JAS President Kenneth Miller, SOFA Vice President Amber Otto, and Japanese Vice President Toshiko Hirota met with Superintendent Moriyama for an introductory meeting to establish a connection and share the mission of JAS.

At JAS, we believe that strong communities begin with strong relationships. Taking the time to connect with local leaders helps lay the foundation for future collaboration, cultural exchange, and greater understanding between the Japanese and SOFA communities.

We sincerely thank Superintendent Moriyama for welcoming us and look forward to continuing to strengthen the connection between JAS and the Iwakuni community.

🤝 地域社会との絆を深めるために

岩国日米協会（JAS）は先日、岩国市教育委員会の森山敏治教育長とお会いする機会をいただきました。

JASのケネス・ミラー会長、SOFA担当副会長のアンバー・オットー氏、そして日本人副会長の廣田敏子氏が森山教育長を訪問し、相互のつながりを築くとともに、JASの活動理念についてお話ししました。

JASでは、強固な地域社会は人と人との強い絆から生まれると考えています。地域のリーダーの方々と対話を重ねることは、将来的な連携や文化交流、そして日本とSOFA（日米地位協定）コミュニティ間の相互理解を深めるための礎となります。

温かく迎えてくださった森山教育長に心より感謝申し上げますとともに、今後もJASと岩国地域社会との絆をさらに強めていけることを楽しみにしております。

🌊🇯🇵 Happy Marine Day! (海の日) 🇯🇵🌊

Today, Japan celebrates Marine Day (Umi no Hi / 海の日), a national holiday observed on the third Monday of July each year.

Marine Day is a time to appreciate the many blessings of the sea and to celebrate Japan's prosperity as a maritime nation. From transportation and trade to fishing, recreation, and breathtaking coastal landscapes, the ocean has long played a vital role in Japan's history, culture, and continued prosperity.

Whether you spend the day relaxing at the beach, exploring the coastline, enjoying fresh seafood, or simply taking in the beauty of the water, we hope you'll take a moment to reflect on the important role the sea plays in connecting communities and enriching our lives.

本日は、毎年7月の第3月曜日に定められた日本の祝日、「海の日」です。

「海の日」は、海の恩恵に感謝し、海洋国家としての日本の繁栄を祝う日です。輸送や貿易から、漁業、レジャー、そして息をのむような海岸の絶景に至るまで、海は日本の歴史や文化、そして発展において、長きにわたり重要な役割を果たしてきました。

ビーチでのんびり過ごしたり、海岸線を散策したり、新鮮な海の幸を味わったり、あるいはただ海辺の美しさを眺めたり……。どのような過ごし方であれ、地域社会をつなぎ、私たちの生活を豊かにしてくれる海の役割について、少し思いを馳せてみてはいかがでしょうか。

🍃✨ What a wonderful afternoon of creativity and connection! ✨🍃

This weekend, participants explored the beauty of nature through a unique botanical art workshop. Using a special type of lotus leaves alongside delicate linden leaves, everyone created one-of-a-kind works of art by arranging the leaves on canvas and bringing them to life with acrylic paint.

The process was simple, relaxing, and welcoming, creating a peaceful atmosphere where creativity could truly flourish. Each participant expressed their own unique style and imagination, resulting in beautiful pieces that reflected their individual artistic vision.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special event! We love bringing our community together through creative experiences that celebrate both art and the natural beauty of Iwakuni. We can't wait to see you at our next event! 🍃🎨💚

🥟✨ What an incredible day in the JAS kitchen! ✨🥢

Our Gyoza & Sōmen Cooking Class was a wonderful success! Participants learned how to make delicious homemade gyoza from scratch, prepared refreshing chilled sōmen, and, most importantly, shared laughter, conversation, and new friendships along the way.

One of the best parts of our cooking classes is seeing people from both the American and Japanese communities come together to learn from one another through food. Every class is an opportunity to experience a new culture, build meaningful connections, and create lasting memories around the table.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this class so special. We can't wait to cook with you again at our next event!
