Experience world-renowned Hiroshima
while studying at RERF

(Invitation to researchers/physicians for 2024 RERF Training Program)

The Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) extends our invitation to scientists around the world to participate in training in Hiroshima for 1-2 weeks during FY2024.

The designated training themes are:
1. Molecular biological research into radiation effects
2. Epidemiological research at RERF
3. Large-volume data analysis using machine learning

The training program will provide scientists and physicians access to our long-standing studies, initiated in 1947, into health effects from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, events in August 1945 that forever shaped the world. It’s an opportunity for trainees to be involved in the world’s most reliable research into radiation health effects. That, and to experience the historical significance of Hiroshima.

Anyone interested in the training needs to file an application with their institute, which in turn will be asked to submit a designated application form (click to download the file) to RERF in the name of the organization.

を開催いたします。

最近、日常生活のなかでも耳にすることが増えてきた「ゲノム」という用語。言葉だけは知っていても、ゲノムとは何なのかよく分からないという方も多いのではないでしょうか。
放射線影響研究所では現在、親の被爆とその子どもの健康についてゲノムレベルでの調査を計画しています。ゲノムとは何か、なぜ今ゲノムの研究が必要なのか、どんな調査をしようとしているのか、放影研以外の医療・研究機関等からも専門家をお招きして詳しくご説明いたします。
市民公開講座は広島で1回、長崎で1回開催いたします。両日とも事前申し込み制です。

・比治山ホール見学会：「研究と歴史と建物をめぐるミニ探訪
現地で開催する対面イベント。放影研広島研究所の移転を前に、普段は一般公開されていない比治山ホールを特別に公開します。放影研スタッフだけでなく、建築の専門家をゲストに迎え、建築家目線での見どころをわかりやすく解説し、前川國男建築をご案内します。

これまで放影研が行ってきた対面式での一般公開では、来訪者お一人お一人と直接お話をさせていただいてきましたが、今年オンライン（Zoom）で対話させていただくことになりました。実際にどんな研究がおこなわれているの？　どんなことが判ったの？ など、さまざまな疑問にお答えします。難しい話だけでなく、どうして研究者になったかなど気軽に対話いただける機会です。放影研の現役通訳さんも参加予定。

Open House 2023 is an event during which RERF opens its doors to the public. In addition to online activities, this year's event will also include limited in-person events on site at RERF.

･ Hijiyama Hall Tour: Brief exploration of research, history, and architecture The tour is to be an in-person event held on site at RERF. Prior to relocation of the RERF Hiroshima Laboratory, Hijiyama Hall, which is typically not available, will be open to the public for this year’s Open House event.

In addition to RERF staff working the Open House, a guest speaker will be invited to explain the architecture of Kunio Maekawa from the eyes of an architectural specialist.

･Zoom livestreaming: Livestreaming event from RERF
At the Open House in-person events held by RERF in the past, RERF has spoken in person with each and every visitor. This year, however, such dialogue will take place online through Zoom, the online meeting platform.

The online dialogue will be a chance for participants to ask questions of our scientists, including about the kind of research in which they are engaged and about what has been discovered through such research.

Not limited to scientific issues, the event will give people the opportunity to speak casually with researchers about why they decided to become a scientist. A staff interpreter will be on hand at the event to help out in cases of communication issues.

※Unfortunately, the tour of Hijiyama Hall, the virtual tour of the Hiroshima RERF, and the live streams from RERF will only be available in Japanese.

被爆77周年長崎原爆者慰霊平和祈念式典

天災、人災が世界の人々を苦しめ、困惑させ、窮地に立たせている中、77回目の祈念日が長崎にめぐってきました。
災禍は人々の心から希望を奪う一方で、それに立ち向かおうとする人々を生み出します。力だけが生み出した瓦礫では、人々は決して幸福にはなれません。
　人は言葉という手段をもっています。「微力だけど無力じゃない」今年の長崎平和宣言で紹介された、高校生平和大使の合言葉です。

The 77th commemoration of the Nagasaki atomic bombing took place in that city amid natural and human-caused disasters that persist in bringing grief and suffering to people around the world.
While they rob people of hope, such catastrophes also give rise to those able to confront them head-on. People can never be satisfied with the ruins generated by brute force.
“We may be weak, but we are not powerless” is a slogan introduced by High School Peace Ambassadors in this year’s Nagasaki Peace Declaration. Human beings have the power of language.

This year — 77 years later — some light?

The Hiroshima atomic bombing happened on August 6, 1945. Now, in 2022, it feels so impossibly long ago.

With nuclear weapons’ use being threatened and increasing numbers of such weapons being stockpiled out of fear, all of the progress that once seemed possible after those dark days at the end of the war seems to be slipping from our collective grasp.

However, there is light — there are signs that the world might be starting to wake up to the reality of its environmental predicament; Hiroshima won the distinction of being selected to host the May 2023 G7 Summit Meeting, a decision certain to bring further attention to, and understanding of, issues facing the world’s first A-bombed city; and Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida recently spoke at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference about his desire to work toward creation of a world without nuclear weapons, a hope that is close to the hearts of A-bomb survivors.

There is more such light to see if we care to. Without this faith, however, things can seem pretty bleak. Amid the uncertainty that blankets the world, let’s ensure the suffering that the A-bomb survivors endured over these 77 years has not been in vain. Let’s remember August 6 once again this year and, by so doing, cover it in hopeful light.

あれから77年たった今、希望の光はさしているのでしょうか？

1945年8月6日、広島へ原子爆弾が投下されました。
2022年の今日、それは遠い昔のように感じます。

核兵器で互いを威嚇することで、各国が保有する核兵器の数が増えてしまい、戦争という闇の時代が終わった後に行ってきた、互いに手をとりあう世界にしていくための努力は、水の泡となるのではないか。そんなふうに、感じてしまいます。

しかし、希望の光はあるのです。人類は、環境が危機に瀕していることに気づきはじめたかもしれません。広島は、2023年5月のG７首脳会議を開催するという栄誉を勝ち取りました。この決定は、最初の被爆地という以上の注目を、広島にもたらすことは間違いありません。そして、岸田首相が、先日、核兵器不拡散条約（NPT）の再検討会議で行った演説でふれた「核なき世界」に向けたプランは、被爆者の声を参考に練られたと言われています。

見ようとすれば、私たちは、希望の光を見出すことができます。そうでなければ、暗雲が立ちこめてばかりです。世界の先行きが不透明な中、被爆者の皆さんが77年耐えてきた苦しみが無駄にならないようにしなければなりません。8月6日を忘れることなく、希望の光を見出しましょう。

This year during the period August 1–10, RERF is set to hold its Open House event, which is designed to open the facilities to the general public, online in the same way it did last year. The event is being organized by Open House working committee members selected from a variety of departments at RERF and will culminate in an event that represents the entire organization. In addition to a mix of different videos, a live-streamed conversation — with RERF Chairman Ohtsura Niwa — will take place this year for the first time.

According to RERF Open House 2022 Nagasaki Chairperson Hiroshi Fuchi, “We created this year’s Open House website with the intent of communicating RERF as it is. Please get to know RERF’s various features by accessing the online event.”

Hiroshima Chairperson Sachiyo Funamoto described her hopes for the online event this way — “I would appreciate it if people could, by taking a look at the event website, find common ground with and draw closer to RERF.”

Almost two years has passed since RERF had to restrict access to our facilities to those outside of the foundation because of the coronavirus pandemic. We truly hope this new year marks a return to the days when many people were able to visit RERF to take in the historical nature of the facilities and the work we carry out here.

RERF offers its prayers for the soul of Sunao Tsuboi on the news of his passing.

Over the years, Sunao Tsuboi provided RERF with advice and understanding concerning the foundation’s work. Starting in 1998, Mr. Tsuboi served as a member of the RERF Local Liaison Council, an external body established to reflect public opinion in RERF’s operations. In 2016, he spoke at one of our public lectures designed to explain radiation health effects to the public, as well as in 2017 at the ABCC-RERF 70th anniversary event. Starting in 2018, he served as a member on the RERF Stakeholder Committee on Usage of A-bomb Survivors’ Biosamples, established to incorporate the opinions of people outside of RERF when advancing future research using archived biosamples such as blood and urine donated by A-bomb survivors.

Particularly noteworthy was when, in November 2005, Mr. Tsuboi spoke encouragingly of RERF at the foundation’s 30th anniversary ceremony.
“It happens to be true that, during that period, the A-bomb survivors turned their backs on the idea of cooperating with RERF and generated countless rumors about the organization… Rather than focus on the past, however, we must work to overcome various problems facing us as we head toward the future. Despite such circumstances as I have just described, RERF dedicated itself to calmly and sincerely carrying out its scientific research. I would hereby like to express my heartfelt respect to RERF’s dedication…”

RERF conveys its sincere gratitude to Sunao Tsuboi and promises to keep in mind his words as we proceed with our research.

May he rest in peace.

坪井 直先生のご逝去を悼む – 公益財団法人 放射線影響研究所 RERF 放射線影響研究所（放影研）は、平和目的のために、原爆放射線の健康影響について調査する日米共同研究機関です。

76回目の平和祈念式典

東京オリンピック閉会式の翌日、長崎は76回目の原爆の日を迎えました。

オリンピックのルーツは、伝染病や紛争が蔓延していた古代ギリシャで、それらを収めるために始まったとの説もあります。

「人類はパンデミックの収束後に、元よりもいい未来を築くためにどうすべきかという問いを共有している。同様に人類を破滅させる核兵器を持ち続ける未来を選ぶのか、一人ひとりが声を挙げ、世界を変える時が来ている」今年の長崎平和宣言の一文です。

今私たちは、未来を左右する分水嶺に、立たされているのかもしれません。

76th Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony

The day following the closing ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Nagasaki commemorated the 76th anniversary of the atomic bombing of that city.

Some hold that the Olympic Games were begun to gain control of widespread pandemics and wars that plagued ancient Greece.

In this year’s Nagasaki Peace Declaration appear the sentences: “Humankind shares the question of how to create a better future after the coronavirus pandemic is brought under control. Similarly, it is now time for all of us to raise our voices to question whether we truly wish to choose a future in which nuclear weapons, with their potential to destroy humanity, continue to exist.”

We could now be witnessing a watershed moment that will affect all of our futures.
