Last Saturday, the staff at Osaka English House had the chance to visit Kyoto and experience one of Japan’s most spectacular summer traditions — the Daimonji Fire Festival (Gozan Okuribi)!

The trip was kindly organised for us by a friend of Osaka English House, who wanted us to experience this unique piece of Japanese culture for ourselves. We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity!

Held every year on August 16th, Gozan Okuribi marks the end of Obon, a traditional Japanese period when it is believed that the spirits of ancestors return to visit their families. To guide the spirits back to the other world, huge bonfires are lit on five mountains surrounding Kyoto.

The most famous is Daimonji (大文字), meaning “large character,” where hundreds of fires are arranged to form the giant character for “great.” Four other mountains are also illuminated with enormous symbols, including Myoho, Funagata, Torii-gate, and Hidaridaimonji

As darkness fell, the mountains around Kyoto suddenly began to glow, creating an incredible sight across the city. 🌃🔥 It was amazing to see such an ancient tradition still bringing people together today and for the OEH team to have the chance to experience Gozan Okuribi firsthand! 🇯🇵

One of Japan’s most magical summer traditions: the Tanabata Lantern Festival. 🏮✨
Thousands of glowing lanterns, handwritten wishes, and streets filled with light made this a night I’ll never forget. Even more special, it’s one of the few festivals that embraces an eco-friendly approach—celebrating with sustainability in mind while keeping the magic alive. 🌙💚

While in Hirakata, Japan, we had the amazing opportunity to take part in a sushi-making class organised and hosted by Osaka English House, held inside a beautifully preserved 100-year-old traditional Japanese house.

We were taught by a real sushi master, who took us through the traditional techniques and skills behind making sushi — from how the knives are sharpened, to the careful preparation and cutting of the fish, and finally how to mould and shape the sushi by hand. 🔪🐟🍣
We got to make a variety of different sushi and learned just how much precision, patience and tradition goes into creating every single piece.

Learning these techniques in such a historic and traditional setting made the experience even more special. It was a wonderful way to experience Japanese culture, history and food all at the same time.

If you’re visiting the area and would like to arrange an experience like this, contact Osaka English House on Instagram for details on how to organise it.

Tenjuan Temple is a quieter alternative when visiting the Nanzenji-Temple complex, with fewer visitors and less crowds✨
The reflection of the trees on the pond, the carefully placed stones, and the gentle movement of the koi create a scene that feels like a living painting — a perfect place to slow down and appreciate Kyoto’s timeless beauty. ⛩️
