8月19日、キラルノット理科教室「電子顕微鏡で見えるカタチ～分子ってなに？キラリティってなに？～」を開催しました。多くの小・中学生にご参加いただき、光学顕微鏡や電子顕微鏡を使った体験を通して、顕微鏡の世界に触れていただきました。🔬✨

Science Knot内にある「日本電子×広島大学 Knotted Room」では、最先端の透過電子顕微鏡（TEM）を見学し、研究者が原子や分子の世界をどのように観察・研究しているのか、その一端に触れる貴重な機会となりました。

本イベントを通して、子どもたちが目を輝かせながら科学を楽しむ姿を見ることができ、私たちも大変うれしく思います。WPI-SKCM²はこれからも、次世代を担う子どもたちが科学をより身近に感じ、科学の世界への興味や好奇心を育む活動を続けてまいります！🌟

On August 19, the Chiral Knot Science Class, titled “電子顕微鏡で見えるカタチ～分子ってなに？キラリティってなに？～” (Shapes Revealed by Electron Microscopy: What Are Molecules? What Is Chirality?), was successfully held with the enthusiastic participation of elementary and junior high school students! 🔬✨

During the event, students explored the fascinating world of microscopy through hands-on activities using optical and electron microscopes. They also had the opportunity to visit the JEOL × Hiroshima University Knotted Room in Science Knot and see its state-of-the-art transmission electron microscope (TEM), offering them a glimpse into how researchers observe and investigate the world of atoms and molecules.

We were delighted to see the students’ curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the event. WPI-SKCM² will continue our efforts to bring science closer to the younger generation and inspire their curiosity and interest in scientific discovery! 🌟

🎉 Congratulations to two WPI-SKCM² researchers! 🔬✨

We are delighted to share that Elizabeth Dresselhaus, Co-PI at WPI-SKCM² and Naeimeh Bahrilaleh, Postdoctoral Researcher have received the Hiroshima University Award for Encouraging Female Researchers for Academic Year 2026! 👏

Their achievements highlight the exciting research being pursued at WPI-SKCM² and the important contributions of women researchers to science.

🎓On August 17, a WPI-SKCM² seminar led by Prof. Yoshika Yajima (Osaka University), brought together a diverse audience from across scientific disciplines to engage with her insightful talk, “The Cultural Transmission of Japanese Ornamental Knots: Women’s Roles from the Meiji Period to the Present ”🧬

Following her seminar, she also led a Chrysanthemum Knot Workshop using braided threads aiming to explore knots from cultural and historical perspectives through a hands-on experience.

🕯️【Notice: Obon Holiday Closure】🕯️

WPI-SKCM² will be closed from August 11 (Tue) to August 14 (Fri), 2025 in observance of Obon (お盆), a traditional Japanese holiday to honor and remember the spirits of one's ancestors.

During this time, many people return to their hometowns, visit family graves, and participate in ceremonies or local festivals with floating lanterns and bon dances. It is a time of reflection, family reunion, and spiritual connection.

We will resume normal operations on August 17 (Mon).

Thank you for your understanding, and we wish everyone a peaceful and meaningful Obon.

🎓On August 5, Hiroshima University welcomed enthusiastic high school students to its Open Campus, offering them the opportunity to explore the diverse academic fields available at the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus and discover pathways that align with their passions and future aspirations.

🥽As part of the event, WPI-SKCM² opened the doors of Science Knot, inviting students to experience the fascinating world of chirality. Through immersive VR content, they explored the science of knots and chirality, while hands-on demonstrations in our state-of-the-art laboratories gave them a closer look at cutting-edge research in action. 🔬

🧬Students also attended expert-led lectures by WPI-SKCM² researchers, gaining valuable insights into their scientific journeys and the exciting possibilities of interdisciplinary research.

We hope that their visit to Science Knot sparks curiosity, nurtures a passion for science, and inspires some of these young minds to become the next generation of researchers.

🎓8月5日、広島大学ではオープンキャンパスが開催され、たくさんの高校生が東広島キャンパスを訪れました。さまざまな学問に触れ、自分の興味や将来につながる学びを探す一日となりました。

🥽WPI-SKCM²では、Science Knotを開放し、VRコンテンツを通して「結び目」と「キラリティ」の科学に触れたほか、最先端の研究設備を備えたラボで実験やデモンストレーションを間近に見学し、「キラリティ」の奥深い世界を体験してもらいました。🔬

🤝 This sculpture, Let Hands Unite for Peace, quietly stands inside the Hiroshima International Conference Center, adjacent to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. To us, it also brings to mind one of the most familiar examples of chirality—our left and right hands, mirror images that can never be perfectly superimposed.

🕊️🔬The symbolism of this sculpture, viewed through the lens of science, reminds us that peace and science are deeply interconnected. As we commemorate the lives lost and reflect on the devastation caused by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, we are reminded that scientific progress carries with it a responsibility to contribute to a more peaceful future.

🌏At WPI-SKCM², we remain committed to advancing science while fostering international collaboration in the pursuit of peace.

🤝平和公園内の広島国際会議場に静かに佇む「手に手を平和にむかって」。

🔬その姿から、私たちは身近な「キラリティ（掌性）」の象徴である左手と右手を思い浮かべます。互いに鏡像の関係にありながら、決して完全に重ね合わせることのできない「二つの手」。科学の視点からこの作品を見つめると、平和と科学のつながりの深さをあらためて考えさせられます。

🕊️8月6日、広島への原子爆弾投下によって失われた多くの命を悼み、その甚大な被害と歴史に思いを馳せるこの日に、私たちは、科学の進歩が平和の実現に寄与するという責務を改めて胸に刻みます。

🌏WPI-SKCM²は、これからも科学の可能性を追求するとともに、国際的な協働を通じて、平和な未来の実現に貢献してまいります。

🔬研究成果のお知らせ/ Publication Announcement

WPI-SKCM²プロジェクト研究員の新家寛正特任准教授らの共同研究グループは、周期的なナノギャップ構造を持つDNA修飾コアシェルナノ粒子結晶の開発と、結晶で生じる表面増強ラマン散乱(SERS)を利用した微量分子の検出を達成しました。
本研究成果は『ACS Applied Optical Materials』に掲載されました。
