This is the page of West Tokyo Haumura Toastmasters club based in Hamura, Tokyo.

Toastmasters is a Interanatinal oraganization that originated in the United States. There are clubs all over the world, and the West Tokyo Haumura Toastmasters Club is made up of members from the Tama area centering on Hamura City. We have no teacher, but members take turns sharing the responsibility of giving speeches, evaluating speeches, and facilitating the meeting. Regular meetings are held o

n 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, from 2:00 p.m.for about 2 hours, at Yutorogi, Hamura City Lifelong Learning Center. Admission fee is 2,400 yen and monthly membership fee is 1.400 yen (paid every 6 months). We look forward to seeing anyone who is interested in communicating in English!

Regular Meeting on August 4th

今日の定例会は、新メンバーの入会式から始まりました。
Tさんは約8年クラブを離れていましたが、このたび再び戻ってきてくださいました。また素敵なスピーチを聴けると思うと、とても嬉しい気持ちになります。

さて、今回は準備スピーチのエントリーはありませんでしたが、TM Gさんがとてもためになるセッションを企画してくれました。
タイトルは「Tips for Speech Evaluation」。

論評（Evaluator）は、多くのメンバーが苦手意識を持つ役割です。スピーチの良かった点と改善点を挙げてフィードバックすることは頭では分かっていても、実際にやってみると難しいものです。

セッションではまず、トーストマスターズ論評コンテストの優勝者によるレクチャー動画を視聴しました。中国のディストリクトチャンピオンが、論評のコツを分かりやすく指南してくれる内容です。

その後、Gさんが動画のポイントをまとめたスライドを使いながらプレゼンを行いました。
論評スピーチも一つの「パフォーマンス」であることを忘れがちであること、表面的な褒め言葉だけでなく内容を深掘りし、スピーチをさらに良くするための具体的な提案を、自分の言葉で伝えることが大切だという点が印象的でした。

ジョークセッションでは、TM Tさんがアメリカの有名コメディアン、ジミー・O・ヤンのジョークを紹介してくれました。

本日のテーブルトピックスセッションは、TM SさんとTM Nさんが二人でTable Topics Master を務め、メンバー全員が順番にスピーチしました。
SさんとNさんがそれぞれ用意した複数のカードの中から一枚選び、そのカードにまつわるエピソードを披露する形式です。
Sさんは「一年の行事」のカード、Nさんは「名画を含む絵画」のカードを準備していました。好きなカードを選べるため、話の展開がしやすかったようです。

Regular Meeting on August 4th

Our regular meeting began with a membership induction ceremony for our new member.
T-san had been away from the club for nearly eight years, and we are delighted to welcome her back.
It is exciting to think that we will once again be able to enjoy her wonderful speeches.

Although we did not have any prepared speeches this time, TM G organized a very insightful educational session titled “Tips for Speech Evaluation.”

Evaluation is a role that many members feel challenged by. Even though we understand the basics—highlighting strengths and suggesting improvements—it can still be difficult to deliver an effective evaluation.

The session began with a lecture video by the Toastmasters Evaluation Contest Champion, featuring a District Champion from China who shared practical tips for giving strong evaluations.

After watching the video, G-san gave a presentation using slides summarizing the key points.
The champion emphasized that an evaluation speech is also a form of performance, and that evaluators should go beyond surface-level praise. Instead, they should go deeper into the content and offer concrete suggestions for improvement, expressed in their own words.

During the Joke Session, TM T introduced a joke by the well-known American comedian Jimmy O. Yang.

For today’s Table Topics Session, TM S and TM N served as Table Topics Masters, and all members delivered impromptu speeches.
Each member selected one card from the sets prepared by S-san and N-san and shared an episode related to the chosen topic.

S-san prepared cards featuring annual events, while N-san prepared cards including famous paintings. Because members could choose a card they liked, it seemed easier for them to develop their stories.

Regular Meeting on July 18th

本日の例会には二名のゲストが参加してくださり、終始和やかな雰囲気で進行しました。

Opening Thoughts（会の始めの短いスピーチ）では、TM Sさんが、定例会の会場である羽村ゆとろぎで開催される終戦記念日（8月15日）のイベントについて紹介しました。

準備スピーチは二本でした。
まず、TM Tさんは、はるばる与那国島からやってきた保護犬によって家族の生活が一変したという心温まるエピソードを語りました。Tさんがストレスを抱えていると察すると、前足を交互に「パタン、パタン」。それが「心配しているよ」というサインなのだそうです。とても可愛らしいですね。

続いて、TM Dさんはサウジアラビアを訪れた際の旅の記憶を共有しました。古い歴史や慣習が残る一方で、テクノロジーや教育などが急速に発展している石油王国。その対比が興味深い内容でした。

テーブルトピックスのテーマは「ちょっとした失敗」。
・道に迷った経験はある？
・無くした物はある？
・遅刻したことはある？
といった身近な質問が並びました。

財布をなくしたエピソードを語ったTM Oさんがベストスピーカーに選ばれました。教訓として「カバンと財布を紐でつなげた」様子を見せてくれ、会場は笑いに包まれました。

Closing Thoughts（会の最後の短いスピーチ）では、TM Gさんが、過去に助けてくれた人にお礼を伝えられなかったことへの後悔について語り、心に残る締めくくりとなりました。

We were delighted to welcome two guests to today’s meeting, which created a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout.

In the Opening Thoughts session, TM S introduced an upcoming event to be held at our regular venue, Hamura Yutorogi, on August 15th to commemorate the end of World War II.

We had two prepared speeches.
First, TM T shared a heartwarming story about how a rescued dog, who came all the way from Yonaguni Island, completely changed her family's daily life. When T is feeling stressed, the dog gently taps its front paws one after the other, as if to say, “I’m worried about you.” Such an adorable gesture.

Next, TM D spoke about memories from a trip to Saudi Arabia. The country is a fascinating blend of long‑standing traditions and rapid development in areas such as technology and education. This contrast made the speech engaging.

The Table Topics session centered on the theme “Small Mistakes.”
・Have you ever gotten lost?
・Have you ever lost something?
・Have you ever been late?

TM O, who shared a story about losing a wallet, was selected as the Best Speaker. The audience burst into laughter when O demonstrated the “lesson learned” by showing how the wallet is now tied to the bag with a string.

For Closing Thoughts, TM G reflected on a past regret, being unable to express gratitude to someone who once helped them. It was a thoughtful and memorable ending to the meeting.

Regular Meeting on July 4th, 2026

Today’s featured speech was “Time to Clear My Mind” by TM K.

During a difficult period in life, TM K was introduced to Caohagan quilts by a friend and soon became captivated by their beauty. Inspired, she began creating her own quilts with a sewing machine and found herself completely immersed in the craft. The audience was amazed by the beautiful pieces she shared on the screen, with many reacting, “Wow!”

She spoke from the heart, sharing that “Sitting in front of my sewing machine brings me peace,” and “Patchwork is more than just a hobby—it helps clear my mind.” Her heartfelt message resonated deeply with everyone in the room.

Evaluator TM G offered valuable feedback, suggesting that a more intriguing speech title—such as “Stitch by Stitch” or “Quilt, My Savior”—could spark curiosity and draw the audience in even before the speech begins.

We were also delighted to welcome several guests, along with a few former members who returned for a visit. It was wonderful to reconnect, and their presence made the meeting even more lively and enjoyable.

本日のスピーチは、TM Kさんによる「Time to Clear My Mind」。

つらい時期にご友人の紹介で出会った「カオハガンキルト」に心を惹かれ、ご自身でもミシンを使った作品づくりに夢中になったそうです。スライドで披露された色鮮やかで温もりあふれる作品の数々に、会場からは「わあ、すごい！」と感嘆の声が上がりました。

「ミシンの前に座ると心が安らぐ」「パッチワークは趣味以上の存在で、思考をクリアにしてくれる」という言葉には、ご自身の体験から生まれた想いが込められており、多くの参加者の心に響くスピーチとなりました。

評価を担当したTM Gさんからは、「Stitch by Stitch」や「Quilt, My Savior」のように、「どんなスピーチなんだろう？」と興味を引くタイトルを付けると、さらに聴衆を惹きつけられるという、実践的で参考になるフィードバックもありました。

さらに今回は、見学者のゲストに加え、以前のメンバーも数名参加。久しぶりの再会に笑顔があふれ、終始和やかで活気に満ちた定例会となりました。

Regular Meeting on June 20th

At today’s meeting, we held an induction ceremony for our newest member. TM O told us that he had been interested in Toastmasters since his very first visit. After the ceremony, he delivered a short speech to introduce himself. We are looking forward to his Ice Breaker speech next time.

We had two prepared speeches.
TM S presented “My Dear Mentor,” sharing a story about meeting the person who became her lifelong mentor.
TM G delivered “A Bitter but Fruitful Drink,” reflecting on more than twenty years of life in Japan since coming from Sri Lanka. She compared her journey to a drink that tasted bitter at first but gradually turned fruity over time, expressing how she has overcome many challenges.

今日は新しいメンバーの入会式を行いました。TM Oさんは初回の見学の時からToastmastersに興味を持たれていたそうです。入会式のあとには、ご自身の紹介を兼ねた短いスピーチを披露。次回のアイスブレークスピーチが楽しみです。

準備スピーチは二つ。
TM Sさんのタイトルは『My Dear Mentor』。生涯のメンターとなった大切な方との出会いについて語ってくれました。
TM Gさんのスピーチ『A Bitter but Fruitful Drink』では、スリランカから日本に来て20年以上の歩みを振り返りました。初めはとても苦く感じたけれど、時を経てフルーティーな味に変わっていったドリンクになぞらえて、多くの困難を乗り越えてきた経験を共有してくれました。

Regular Meeting on June 6th

6月に入り、梅雨の気配が近づいてきました。
トーストマスターズでは7月から新年度が始まるため、この日は新役員の任命式を行いました。
さらに、見学3回目のゲストが入会を表明してくださり、新しい仲間が増える嬉しいニュースもありました。

準備スピーチは2件。
TM Dさんは、インドと中国にまたがる大陸から日本へと続く壮大な旅を、スライドとともに紹介してくれました。実際にDさんが歩んだスケールの大きな旅路は、聴衆を引き込みました。

TM Tさんのスピーチタイトルは “Does Tanuki Trick Humans?”。
愛犬との散歩中に遭遇した「なぞの動物」。タヌキなのか、はたまたキツネなのか…。夜の河川敷でふわりと揺れる尻尾の描写に、私たちも思わずドキドキ。Tさんと愛犬の一挙手一投足に心が動く、ワクワクとほっこりが同時に味わえるスピーチでした。

テーブルトピックスは、6月にちなんだ3つのお題。
「父の日」「時の記念日」「梅雨」から、参加者それぞれが思い思いのエピソードを語りました。

As we enter June, the signs of the rainy season are beginning to appear.
Since the new Toastmasters year starts in July, we held the officer installation ceremony at this meeting.
We also had some wonderful news — a guest who visited us for the third time expressed his intention to join, and we are delighted to welcome a new member.

We had two prepared speeches.
TM D delivered a captivating presentation about his journey across the vast continent stretching between India and China, continuing all the way to Japan. His grand adventure, accompanied by slides, drew us into his story.

TM T’s speech was titled “Does Tanuki Trick Humans?”
One day, during a walk with her dog, she encountered a mysterious animal — was it a tanuki, or perhaps a fox? The image of a fluffy tail swaying in the darkness along the riverbank made us wonder as well. It was a charming speech filled with both excitement and warmth, following every little movement of TM T and her beloved dog.

For Table Topics, we had three themes related to June:
Father’s Day, Time Day, and the Rainy Season.
Participants shared their own stories inspired by these seasonal topics.

Regular Meeting on May 16th　【Joint Meeting with Hachioji Eight Princes Toastmasters】

5月16日（土）は、八王子 Eight Princes トーストマスターズとの合同例会でした。
会場の羽村市「ゆとろぎ」には、八王子トーストマスターズクラブの皆さんに加え、甲府トーストマスターズや他クラブのメンバーも駆けつけてくださり、開始前からにぎやかな雰囲気が広がっていました。

今回の合同例会では、各クラブからの準備スピーチ、テーブルトピックスや『なぞなぞ』セッションなど、バラエティ豊かな企画が続きました。
スピーカーの個性が光るスピーチ、「なるほど！」と感心する回答が飛び出す即興スピーチ、そして会場全体が一緒になって考える『なぞなぞ』を楽しみました。
初めて参加されたゲストの方々にも、トーストマスターズの楽しさと温かさを存分に感じていただけたのではないかと思います。

例会後は、近くのレストランで懇親会を開催しました。
クラブの垣根を越えて交流できるのは合同例会ならではですね！

On Saturday, May 16th, we held a joint meeting with the Hachioji Eight Princes Toastmasters.
At our venue, “Yutorogi” in Hamura City, members from the Hachioji club, Kofu Toastmasters, and several other clubs joined us, filling the room with lively energy even before the meeting began.

This special joint meeting featured prepared speeches from each club, as well as a variety of fun activities such as Table Topics and a “Riddle Session.”
We enjoyed speeches that showcased each speaker’s unique style, spontaneous answers that made us think “Ah, that’s clever!”, and riddles that had the entire room thinking together.
We hope that our first-time guests were able to fully experience the warmth and enjoyment that Toastmasters has to offer.

After the meeting, we held a gathering at a nearby restaurant.
One of the best parts of a joint meeting is the chance to connect across club boundaries, and it truly became a wonderful opportunity for交流 and new friendships.

Regular Meeting on May 2nd

今日はなんと、クラブ発足から通算700回目の定例会でした。
初めてのゲストも2名参加され、ちょっと特別な雰囲気の会になりました。

West Tokyo Hamura Toastmasters が設立されたのは 1995年11月。
30年以上の歴史があるクラブです。
会の冒頭では、当時を知るベテランメンバーからクラブの歩みが紹介されました。
立ち上げ期にクラブ存続のため尽力したレジェンドの話や、当初は数名で定例会を行っていた思い出など、懐かしく温かいエピソードが語られました。
ゲストの方々にもクラブの背景を知っていただく、良い機会になりました。

TM Tさんの準備スピーチは、自然豊かな JR五日市エリアの見どころやご当地グルメを紹介。
GWにぴったりの内容でした。
聞いているだけで、ちょっと旅に出たくなるようなスピーチでした。

Table Topics は『5月』にちなんだお題が出されました。
・新緑の思い出は？
・5月病になったことある？
・GWの思い出は？
季節感たっぷりで、みんなのエピソードを聞いて和やかな気分になりました。
