One week to go!

The 26-27 Academic Year is almost here - and at Harrow Appi Japan, we hit the ground running.

New students, returning students and a packed first term already taking shape. From Short Ex and Formal Dinners, to the Jazz Festival, House Stomp & Shout and a full school musical - there is so much to look forward to, in Term 1 alone!

There are schools with a view of the mountains. And then there is Harrow Appi Japan.

Today we celebrate 山の日 — Japan's national holiday dedicated to the mountains — and we cannot think of a better place in the world to mark it. From the slopes of White Season to the trails of Green Season, our students don't just admire the mountains. They live in them, learn from them and are shaped by them every single day.

At Harrow Appi Japan, learning extends far beyond four walls - as a recent collaboration between our Computer Science and Mathematics departments so beautifully showed.

Our Year 9 students were challenged to measure the elevations of objects around the school, including the nearby mountain! In Computer Science, they coded their own micro:bit to read angles of elevation using its internal accelerometer, while in Mathematics they drew on the trigonometry and algebra they had mastered this year. Bringing the two together, they constructed working inclinometers and put them to the test in an elevations maths contest — solving real height problems in the landscape around them.

It is a small but wonderful leap from classroom theory to real-world problem-solving in our Appi surroundings. Set amongst the mountains of Appi Kogen, our students enjoy a classroom unlike any other - where the natural world inspires learning without limits, and prepares them so well for all that lies ahead.

We are delighted to celebrate Gwen, who has secured an impressive four university offers from some of the United Kingdom's most distinguished institutions - a wonderful journey from the mountains of Appi Kogen to the United Kingdom.

Her offers come from King's College London, The University of Edinburgh, University of Birmingham and Durham University.

Remarkably, all four of Gwen's offers come from universities ranked within the QS World Top 100 - a wonderful reflection of the academic rigour, curiosity and determination she has shown throughout her time with us.

With our students far away for the holidays, a peaceful quiet descends upon Harrow Appi Japan and once again, Appi Kogen becomes a place of nature, rest and relaxation.

Set amongst the mountains of Iwate Prefecture, our campus is surrounded by some of Japan's most breathtaking scenery. In these gentle weeks, the peaks, forests and clear mountain air come into their own - serene, unhurried and beautifully still.

It is a fitting reminder of the rare environment our students are so fortunate to call home. We look forward to welcoming our students back next month. But for now - quiet.

At the end of each term, we welcome our parents into school life for Parent Week - a treasured chance to connect and celebrate the bond between home and school.

This term, our community came together for two special gatherings. Meet the Beaks offered families an informal evening to get to know our teaching staff over relaxed conversation, with delicious food and drink from our wonderful local vendors showcasing the best of the Appi region. We were also delighted to host our Graduate Lunch, a warm celebration bringing our eldest students and their families together as they prepare for the next chapter ahead.

At Harrow Appi Japan, the partnership between home and school sits at the heart of our 360° personalised care - ensuring every student is known, supported and championed.

Last term, our school came alive with the timeless words of William Shakespeare, as students took to the stage for our Shakespeare Festival. Across the afternoon, our young performers delivered extracts from As You Like It, The Winter's Tale, Hamlet, Twelfth Night, Henry V, The Merchant of Venice, King Lear and Richard II.

With students from across all of our houses taking part, the performances brimmed with confidence, creativity and remarkable talent. For an international community such as ours - home to students of 29 nationalities - events like these hold a special significance. There is no finer test of language than the rich, demanding verse of Shakespeare, and our students rose to the challenge magnificently.

At Harrow Appi Japan, we are deeply committed to our students' language development, gently stretching them beyond their comfort zone so that they may grow in fluency, eloquence and self-assurance.

This term, our students have shown the very best of the Harrow Appi Japan spirit through two wonderful charitable initiatives.

On Sunday, our Hearn House students brought their two-week charity challenge to a triumphant close with a Charity Car Wash - rolling up their sleeves to wash over twenty-one cars and raising more than 200,000 yen for Birmingham Children's Hospital. An outstanding achievement, and one in which every participant should take immense pride.

Meanwhile, our Shaftesbury Enterprise students rallied the whole school - students and Beaks alike - to collect clothing, books and goods for the Morioka Welfare Bank, a meaningful opportunity to give back to the local community that surrounds us.

Initiatives such as these lie at the very heart of a Harrow Appi Japan education. As a full boarding school, every pupil belongs to a house family where compassion, teamwork and service to others are nurtured each day. Through our co-curricular programme, our young people learn that true leadership means looking beyond oneself - serving others and making a tangible difference in the world around them. These are the values that will distinguish them throughout their lives.

It simply wouldn't be the end of term without our beloved Green Long Ducker!

Inspired by the historic Long Ducker charity run from Harrow on the Hill in London, our own mountain race takes on the slopes of Mt. Maemori. This year came with a twist: our Prep students raced halfway up the mountain and back down again, while our Senior students conquered the climb all the way to the summit - rewarded, happily, with a gondola ride back down.

Thanks to the wonderful generosity of our parents, who sponsored their children with such enthusiasm, we are proud to have raised 479,000 JPY for Mirai no Mori - a not-for-profit creating life-changing outdoor programmes for abused, neglected and orphaned young people across Japan.

The celebrations continued into the afternoon with our wonderful summer fair - led entirely by our students - featuring a lively series of activities and delicious snacks, all in aid of UNICEF. A true showcase of student leadership, community spirit and generosity, and a wonderful way to round off an amazing term.
