In this debut edition of Excited by the Science, James Graham PhD, CMPP and Daniel McGowan, PhD, MInstD run through a new article in Nature Medicine, and the new ground this study is breaking.

By applying artificial intelligence (AI) to nocturnal breathing rhythms, Yang et al. found a novel means of detecting Parkinson’s. This opens up a new avenue for cutting-edge research. Drs. Graham and McGowan discussed the details and significance of this study.

We had the honor of speaking to accomplished women in science who’ve battled the odds to make a difference in scientific communities around the world.

We have paid/gated access. And open access. What’s hybrid access?
What’s its role? Perfect balance or "double-dip"?

Hybrid journals aren’t new. They aimed to combine traditional paid-and-gated journals with the benefits of open and free access for readers. In return, the authors pay for an OA option.

Is that fair? Is it a good balance? That depends on your needs.

You can enjoy the prestige and perceived rigor of a conventional journal AND the broad exposure from open access.

But you do usually have to pay for that option.

Fully OA journals, however, are just that – premised on open access. Hybrids were intended to be a bridge. Are they doing that? Do they have a future?

Which do you think is more likely to be cited?

An article that’s free for all to read? Or a paywalled article?

We’ll leave the answer to you, but greater exposure (and perhaps greater likelihood of being cited, and not just by high schoolers) is one benefit of publishing in an open access journal.

You can recommend peer reviewers when you submit your paper for publication. Some journals even require it. But… how?

⇨ Start with your professional connections. Not colleagues, but those you know from the research community. Those you know have an understanding of, and insight into, your specific area of research.

⇨ Search your manuscript's reference list for candidates.

⇨ Dive into Google Scholar and other databases.

As you do this, look to put together a geographically diverse, gender-diverse list of 3–5 reviewers who can understand your work both intimately and in the BIGGER PICTURE.

🙅 And one DON’T: Don’t list 5 of your coauthors (bonus DON’T points if they’re from the same country).
