Have you noticed these cute puffy stickers popping up all over Japan?

They're called Bonbon Drop Stickers (ボンボンドロップシール), and they've become one of Japan's biggest stationery trends!

They're not just popular with kids. Plenty of adults collect them too, decorating notebooks, phone cases, journals, and photocard holders. Some fans even go on "sticker patrols" (シールパトロール or シルパト) to hunt for the newest designs before they sell out!

They're so popular that many designs disappear from store shelves almost as soon as they're released, and some rare stickers even end up being resold online for much higher prices.

If you're planning a trip to Japan, don't forget to stop by a stationery shop... you might end up starting a collection before you know it✨

This past July 7th was Tanabata, one of Japan's most loved summer festivals! You probably already know the tradition of writing your wishes on colourful strips of paper called tanzaku (短冊) and hanging them on bamboo branches.

But have you ever wondered why?

The festival is based on the legend of Orihime, a weaver princess, and Hikoboshi, a cowherd, who fell in love. They became so absorbed in spending time together that they neglected their duties, so Orihime's father, the Sky King, separated them on opposite sides of the Milky Way.

Seeing how heartbroken they were, he allowed them to reunite just once a year: on the seventh day of the seventh month. According to the legend, if the skies are clear, they can cross the Milky Way and meet again, making Tanabata a celebration of love, hope, and wishes✨

Did you know that over 400 years ago, a group of samurai traveled all the way from Japan to Europe?

The Keicho Embassy (1613-1620) was one of Japan's earliest official diplomatic missions to the West. Led by the samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga, the delegation traveled to Spain and even met the Pope in Rome!

Although the mission didn't lead to long lasting diplomatic relations at the time, it became a remarkable symbol of early cultural exchange between Japan and Europe. Some of the samurai who took part in the Keicho Embassy decided to remain in the Spanish town of Coria del Río instead of returning to Japan, and many of their descendants today bear the surname Japón (Japan). There is even a statue of Hasekura Tsunenaga in the town, celebrating this unique connection between Japan and Spain!

Look at these dishes carefully… would you believe that none of them are real food?

These incredibly realistic food displays are called shokuhin sanpuru (食品サンプル), or food replicas. You'll find them outside restaurants all across Japan, helping customers see exactly what each dish looks like before they order.

Made from plastic or resin, they're often so realistic that it's hard to tell them apart from the real thing! Some workshops even let you create your own food replica to take home as a unique souvenir✨
